After starting the 2009 season 4-0, following a 2-1 win over Sierra of Rocklin on February 3, the Ohlone softball team suffered its first defeat of the season when they lost two home games last Sunday, Feb. 8.
In the early game they were defeated by Fresno City College, 5-4, and then lost the night cap, 2-1, to San Joaquin Delta of Stockton to drop their record to 4-2.
In the victory over Sierra, sophomore pitcher Kelly Colker went the distance, giving up just three hits while walking none and striking out two to improve her record to 3-0. Freshman Paulina Gentry had two hits for the Renegades.
Game one on Sunday saw Colker again go the distance, but she gave up ten hits, a walk and had three strikeouts. Fresno took a 5-1 lead into the sixth, when Ohlone rallied with one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but it was not enough. Top hitters for the Renegades were sophomore transfer and third baseman, Audrea Lopez, who was 2-3 with an RBI and a stolen base, and sophomore catcher, Kat Sumner, who had a double, an RBI and three runs scored.
Game two Sunday had freshman pitcher Kendall Beermann go the full seven innings. She gave up five hits and had six strikeouts. Sophomore shortstop Jamie Miller had a double, one of only two hits by the Renegades.
Ohlone hits the road for the first time this season when they travel to Modesto on Thursday, Feb. 12, then play College of the Sequoias and Cypress College in Visalia over the weekend, February 14-15. The Renegades return home on Tuesday, Feb. 17, when they open Coast Conference North (CCN) league play again College of San Mateo at 3 p.m.
