The Chabot College softball team put up a strong effort against rival and six-time conference champion Ohlone, but the Renegades used a four-run fourth inning and a gutty pitching effort from ace Kelly Colker in a 9-4 win over the host Gladiators in Coast Conference action Thursday.
Colker, a Newark Memorial alum, went the distance, scattering nine hits and striking out nine while walking none as Ohlone improved to 3-0 in conference play and 10-6 overall. Audrea Lopez and Ashley Nahale (Kennedy-Fremont) provided an offensive boost for the Renegades.
Lopez went 3-for-4 on the day, and Nahale hit a two-run homer to tie the score at 4-4 in the fourth.
Kim Cawley and Julyssa Perry (James Logan) added RBI singles later in the fourth to give Ohlone a 6-4 lead, and it never looked back.
Chabot was also done in by its defense as the Gladiators committed five errors, which led to four unearned runs off Chabot pitcher Shannon Merritt (Tennyson).
Ohlone jumped on Merritt from the start as Jamie Miller led off the game with a walk, went to second on a bunt and advanced to third as Perry reached on an error. Perry stole second and when the ball bounced away from Chabot shortstop Raquel Savoy, Miller scored for a 1-0 Renegades lead. Perry then scored on a double by Lopez.
The Gladiators bounced back in their home half of the first as Rachael Kroneder singled with two outs and Deena Qualls (Logan) was hit by a pitch to bring up catcher Nikki Freiburg.
Freiburg tagged a 1-1 pitch from Colker and sent it over the right-center field fence for a three-run homer to give Chabot a 3-2 lead.
In the third, lefty Brittany Wright launched a moon shot that stayed just fair down the right-field line and over the fence for a solo shot and a 4-2 Chabot advantage.
Colker settled down and shut out Chabot the rest of the way.
Miller reached base three times and scored three runs while Shelby Tomasello and Nahale scored twice for the Renegades.
Kroneder had three hits and Wright added two more for the Gladiators, who fell to 4-1 in conference play and 7-6 overall.
