IT'S A MAD softball world at Central Park in Fremont this weekend.
Led by ace pitcher Kelly Colker, a Newark Memorial High graduate, the powerful Ohlone College softball team is hosting its 17th annual March Madness tournament. The 16-team event began Saturday with pool play and wraps up today.
Other local teams participating are Diablo Valley College, guided by new coach Angie Goularte, and Chabot, piloted by coach Chelsea Spencer.
Silver Bracket (Consolation) quarterfinals are at 9 a.m. today, and Gold Bracket (Championship) quarterfinals are at 11 a.m. Semifinals are at 1 p.m., with the finals at 3 p.m.
Guided by Donna Runyon, Ohlone (14-6, 7-0 Coast Conference), ranked sixth in Northern California, entered the tourney with some nice momentum. The Renegades beat Cabrillo 5-2 in conference play on Thursday behind Colker's strong pitching. She went the distance, walking none and striking out six. Kim Cawley, Ashley Nahale, Paulina Gentry and Ashtyn Mullin each had doubles for the Renegades.
Ohlone freshman Kendall Beerman (Granada), a right-handed pitcher who bats left, has a 3-3 pitching mark against tough competition. Speedy leadoff Jamie Miller (Granada) is hitting close to .400 and leads the conference in stolen bases with about 17, ranking near the top in Northern California.
"She's always dirty at the end of the game … headfirst slides, whatever," Runyon said.
Tall first baseman Shelby Tomasello (California HS) leads Ohlone in extra-base hits. She also played goalkeeper on the Ohlone soccer team.
The Renegades also beat Chabot 9-4 on March 5 in conference play. Nahale was 4-for-4 with a two-run homer. Chabot catcher Nikki Freiburg slugged a three-run homer, and teammate Brittany Wright also homered.
Admission for March Madness is $6 (adults), $4 (minors, seniors), and under 5 is free. High school students (or youth players) wearing their softball uniforms get in free.
