Coaches Chelsea Spencer of Chabot and Donna Runyon of Ohlone [emphasis added] are looking forward to taking their respective team to the next level in the 2010 softball season. For Chabot, that would be a Coast Conference North (CCN) Championship and a place in the 16-team California Community College (CCC) NorCal Regional Tournament; Ohlone would like an eighth straight CCN Championship and a CCC State Championship.

In 2009, Chabot just missed out on going to the post seas after losing its last game of the season to College of San Mateo. A win would have given them second place in CCN and an automatic bid to the Nor Cal Regional. Instead, San Mateo got the bid.

2009 saw Ohlone win its seventh consecutive CCN crown and capture both the first- and second-round regional tournaments to send them, for the first time, to the eight-team (four each from NorCal and SoCal) Cal State CC Tournament held in Salinas. However, the Renegades lost their first two games of the double-elimination championship and would like to get back to "State" and put-up some "W's".

Ohlone started out this year with a 10-0 road win over Modesto, a game called after five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule. Freshman Jessica Varaday pitched the six-hit abbreviated shutout giving up one walk while striking out six. Sophomore first baseman Shelby Tomasello and freshman leadoff hitter Candice Christiansen each rapped out a triple and a double with three RBIs.

Renegades did not fair as well on their trip to Stockton where they were defeated by Fresno City, 7-4, and by the host San Joaquin Delta, 7-3.

In the Fresno game, Varaday went the distance giving up 12 hits and six base-on-balls. Sophomores Ashley Nahale (HR) and Julyssa Perry (2B) each had extra-base hits. Against Delta, Varaday gave up four runs on four hits in one inning of work while Nahale pitched the final five innings yielding three runs and six hits. Perry had two of Ohlone's four hits and freshman Stephanie Hatley knocked a double.

Traveling to the College of the Sequoias in Visalia for the Stars and Stripes Tournament Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 13-14, Ohlone opened with two shutout wins on Saturday: 3-0 over the host Sequoia; and 2-0 over Cosumnes River of Sacramento. Star of the Cosumnes game was Varaday as she threw a four-hit, three-walk shutout while also banging out two doubles. Christiansen added another double and an RBI with sophomore Ashtyn Mullin singling in the other run.

Sunday, Feb. 14, Ohlone lost 10-7 to Butte of Oroville then came back in the seventh to tie Cuesta from San Luis Obispo, 5-5 when they ran out of daylight. Renegades are 3-3-1 on the year.

After getting its openers against Modesto and West Valley postponed, Chabot played Sacramento City on Saturday, Feb. 13 at San Mateo. Sophomore Shannon Merritt took the mound for the Chabot Gladiators.

After two scoreless innings for both sides, Sac City got on the board first when they plated four runs in the top of the third on an error, a double, a single and a two-run home run.

Chabot would answer in its half of the third when freshman first baseman Vanessa Bocog led off with a single and promptly stole second. After an out, Cheyanne Bennitt walked to put runners on first and second. Coach Spencer then decided to send up a pinch hitter, freshman Amanda O'Conner, who then deposited the ball over the left field fence for a three-run homer.

Spencer then brought in southpaw Bennitt to start the fourth. After giving up a four-pitch walk to the first batter she faced, Bennitt held Sac City scoreless and hitless over the next three innings. However, Chabot also was unable to plate any runs over the same three innings and finally in the top of the seventh, Bennitt gave up her first hit, a solo home run. Sac City would score one more run in seventh with the help of a Gladiator error, then the team from the capital struck out Chabot in order in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-3 win.

Both Chabot and Ohlone had scheduled CCN league games on Tuesday, Feb. 16, with results unavailable at press time. Go to the TCV Sports Web site for an up-to-date listing of scores and schedules at www.tricityvoice.com/sports.

Chabot has a make-up game at home with Modesto on Thursday, Feb. 18, at noon which will be followed by Modesto-West Valley at 2 p.m. On Friday, Feb. 19, the Gladiators host Lassen of Susanville at noon, followed by Lassen-Monterey Peninsula at 2 p.m. For Ohlone, they will host Foothill at 3 p.m. on February 18.
