Ohlone College Lady Renegades softball of Coast Conference North (CCN), coming off a five-game sweep in the Napa Valley Tournament, dropped two heart-breaking contests against Coast Conference South (CCS) foes during last week's play.
On Tuesday, March 23, Ohlone took on Gavilan, and it looked like the game would be decided early as both teams got on the board in the second inning. Gavilan tallied three runs in the top of the inning and the Renegades plated four in the bottom half.
Both teams would go scoreless over the next four innings before Gavilan struck in the top of the seventh. A leadoff triple, followed by a two-base error and a double plated the tying and go-ahead runs for the visitors.
Ohlone had its chance in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore shortstop Ashley Nahale led off with a double and promptly stole third. Shelby Tomasello then worked the count to 3-1 and tried for a suicide squeeze but popped it to the charging Gavilan first baseman who threw to third to double-up Nahale and give the Renegades its first conference loss, 5-4.
Jessica Varady gave up seven hits and struck out six in the pitching efforts. She also drove in two runs.
Then on Thursday, March 25, the two conference leaders -- Ohlone of CCN and San Jose City of CCS -- faced off.
Ohlone had beaten San Jose City, 1-0, in the Napa Valley Tournament. Again, the early innings appeared to be the story as City opened with two runs in the first inning and the Renegades answering with two in the bottom of the first on a Tomasello two-run double and two more in the second from RBI singles by Ashtyn Mullen and Varady.
San Jose City, broke four innings of silence with four runs on four hits in the seventh, leading to its 6-4 win over the Lady Renegades.
The Renegades traveled across the bay to the College of San Mateo to take on Shasta on Saturday, March 27. Shasta opened the scoring with a solo homerun off Varady in the top of the fifth. Mullen tied it for Ohlone in the bottom half with an RBI single, plating Mariah Jones. Nahale followed with another single to score Varady. After a walk to Tomasello, Stefanie Hatley rapped out her second double of the day to score Nahale, giving the Renegades a 3-1 lead.
Varady allowed a run in the seventh but escaped a jam and the Renegades earned a hard-fought 3-2 win. Ohlone is now 19-8-1 on the year and 7-2 in CCN, a half game behind San Mateo.
Chabot had a bad week, going 0-4. They dropped a home decision to Cabrillo, 8-3, on Thursday, March 25, and a road game to Gavilan, 10-5, the next day.
The Lady Gladiators traveled to Sacramento on Saturday, March 27, where they lost, 2-1, to Sequoias and 4-2 to Cosumnes River. Chabot is now 10-19-1 overall and 3-7 in CCN.
Next up for Chabot is a CCN road game against Foothill on Thursday, April 1, and a home game on Tuesday, April 6, against Mission of Santa Clara. Game times are both at 3 p.m.
On Monday, March 29, Ohlone hosted Chabot in a make-up game; Chabot went on to host West Valley on Tuesday, March 30. Both games were unavailable at press.
Ohlone also has make-up games against Monterey Peninsula, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31, at Ohlone, followed by a 3 p.m. game on Thursday, April 1, on the Fremont Campus against San Mateo.
