Jessica Varady, a 5'4" star sophomore softball pitcher at Ohlone College this past spring has decided to take her skills as a student-athlete down the road and play for Division I San Jose State University where she received a full softball scholarship. Varady, a 2009 graduate of Livermore High School, honed her softball and pitching skills the last two years at Ohlone Community College under veteran head coach, Donna Runyon.

Varady was twice named the Tri-City Voice Female Athlete of the Month; April 2010 and again in April 2011. She also was the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Athlete of the Month in April 2010. Coach Runyon has now nominated Varady for the 2010-2011 Ohlone College Female Athlete of the Year. Winner will be announced in August.

As a student, Varady has maintained at 2.9 GPA and in her final semester at Ohlone she carried 18 units. She currently has 64 units transferable to the California State University (CSU) system and is enrolled in two summer school classes at Ohlone. She will get her Associate of Arts degree later this month.

In her two years at Ohlone, Varady was twice named Coast Conference North Most Valuable Pitcher which automatically put her on the first team all state team. In 2011 Varady also received the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association All American Award for excellence in softball.

Over her two years of play at Ohlone, Varady played in every game, was a team leader in base stealing, on base percentage, doubles, triples and home runs. In 2011 she batted .408 and was one of the top 15 batters in Northern California. On the rubber, Varady was a workhorse as she pitched in 421 innings over two years with 52 career wins, 27 in 2011, and 355 career strikeouts. In records dating back to 1988, Varady leads in many of Ohlone's pitching categories.

Varady is the daughter of Nancy and Scott Varady of Livermore. She has an older sister, Andrea, who played two years of softball for Patten University in Oakland. Varady wants to continue in her father's footsteps, who spent most of his career in law enforcement, as she plans on majoring in criminal justice at SJSU.

"Jessica's intense determination to succeed, ability to stay focused on her goals, and discipline to balance academics and athletics, will assist in her ability to conquer her challenges at the next level and in life," said coach Runyan. "She sets high standards for herself and works hard to achieve them. Her demeanor and persistence to get it right makes her a great competitor. This young lady will not be outworked."
