Summer Wrap Up
August 1, 2016 - As we wrap up the summer and simultaneously close the book on 2015-2016 while opening the 2016-2017 book, we want to recognize a couple more athletes.
We've already recognized Alexis Chang signing with Bethany College in the previous story, but there are a few more athletes that deserve a mention as well before we move forward. Around the time Alexis signed, opposite hitter/outside hitter Audrey Vaughn was doing the same. Audrey also joins the list of Renegades moving on to play at the next level having signed with the Warriors of William Jessup University in Rocklin, CA. "Audrey is dynamic player that brings a lot of energy, and I have no doubt that she will make an impact on the Warrior's volleyball program," said coach Penaflor.
Despite Jenni Brochu's decision to hang up the shoes, she continues to rack up the accolades. Late this summer, Jenni Brochu was selected as the 2015-2016 Ohlone College Female Athlete of the Year. She becomes the first Athlete of the Year selected under Coach Penaflor's tenure as well as the first exclusive volleyball athlete to be given this award since its inception in 1976 (Ashley Rogers was selected in 2008 as a Water Polo/Swimming/Volleyball athlete). Jenni will be recognized at this year's 32nd Annual Ohlone College Golf Tournament on September 12, 2016 at Castlewood Country Club.
Congratulations to Krissa Marie San Juan in her acceptance to the University of San Francisco. Despite having received a few offers to play at the next level, Krissa decided to pursue her nursing degrees at one of the most prestigious schools in the bay area. We wish her luck on the other side of the bay!
Finally, a shout out goes to the rest of the 2015-2016 sophomore class. Mary Newman, Brianna Hill, and Amri Pascual as they continue their education as well continue their efforts in the real world by stepping up their work hours. Camaryn Bricker will also finish her academics at Ohlone College in pursuit of her AA degree after this fall semester as well as an additional certificate of completion in Kinesiology. Camaryn will also be joining the Ohlone College Volleyball staff as a student assistant.
On to 2016-2017!!!!
Alexis Chang Signs with Bethany College
Tuesday, June 21, 2016 - Outside hitter/defensive specialist Alexis Chang joined the growing list of former Renegade volleyball players to move on to play at the next level when she made the decision to sign with the Swedes of Bethany College. Located in Lindsborg, Kansas, Chang makes the big move across the country looking to make a splash with a program that hopes to change it's luck after 7 straight losing seasons. "I really feel like I'm ready to take the next step" Chang said about her decision to sign with the Swedes. "To be honest, Bethany felt like home." Alexis will stick around and train with the Renegades through beginning of summer practices, but she then heads to Kansas at the end of July to start the next chapter of her career. "She worked hard to get to where she is now, and I know she'll be a great contributor to that program," Coach Penaflor added. "I hope she has a great experience out there and gets exactly what she's looking for during her time as a Swede."
Ohlone College Volleyball players selected to CCCWVCA Scholar Athlete Team
Friday, April 29, 2016 - Two Ohlone College volleyball players were selected this past week to the 2015-2016 California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Team. The two were sophomore setter and team captain Camaryn Bricker and sophomore outside hitter and team captain Jenni Brochu. The girls are two of 18 selected this academic year, with the criteria being one season completed with 24 units accumulated and a minimum 3.5 grade point average. This also marks the first time an Ohlone College Volleyball player has been awarded this honor since coach Jeremy Penaflor took over in 2008.
