Alexis Chang Signs with Bethany College
Tuesday, June 21, 2016 - Outside hitter/defensive specialist Alexis Chang joined the growing list of former Renegade volleyball players to move on to play at the next level when she made the decision to sign with the Swedes of Bethany College. Located in Lindsborg, Kansas, Chang makes the big move across the country looking to make a splash with a program that hopes to change it's luck after 7 straight losing seasons. "I really feel like I'm ready to take the next step" Chang said about her decision to sign with the Swedes. "To be honest, Bethany felt like home." Alexis will stick around and train with the Renegades through beginning of summer practices, but she then heads to Kansas at the end of July to start the next chapter of her career. "She worked hard to get to where she is now, and I know she'll be a great contributor to that program," Coach Penaflor added. "I hope she has a great experience out there and gets exactly what she's looking for during her time as a Swede."
Ohlone College Volleyball players selected to CCCWVCA Scholar Athlete Team
Friday, April 29, 2016 - Two Ohlone College volleyball players were selected this past week to the 2015-2016 California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Team. The two were sophomore setter and team captain Camaryn Bricker and sophomore outside hitter and team captain Jenni Brochu. The girls are two of 18 selected this academic year, with the criteria being one season completed with 24 units accumulated and a minimum 3.5 grade point average. This also marks the first time an Ohlone College Volleyball player has been awarded this honor since coach Jeremy Penaflor took over in 2008.
From the Coach's Desk, December 22, 2015
As we wind down on 2015 and prepare for the new year, I reflect back on where we ended up and how we got there. Finishing the season 19-6 overall and 7-5 in the conference, one might look at that and think "Hey, nice job!" And I completely agree.
If you told me at the beginning of any season that in 25 matches we would be better in 19 of them, I'd take that in a heartbeat. Considering our humble beginnings as a program since I took over, I would have taken half of that 19 and still would have been happy. 7-5 in the Coast Conference South is a bit tough to swallow, but only because we were hoping to be better.
It’s a tough life being part of the Coast Conference this season, or any season, North or South. Of the 13 teams in both divisions, 9 teams have plus .500 records and two made it to the state championships!
It’s a jungle out there, but it's great to play awesome competition every night to push our team to the extent of our abilities both physically and mentally. The girls worked hard all season, and it showed by our record.
As all teams do, we had to deal with injury and illness, team dynamics, works schedules, and just the general life of a community college student athlete. And despite all those challenges, this group of girls managed to put differences aside and come together to make up what became a special season. Yes we've lost some tough ones, and yes we didn't qualify for the playoffs, but lessons have been learned and those matches are now in our rear view mirror.
It's time to look back to celebrate these 12 wonderful, young female student athletes for the great work they did this season. It's time to move forward to the new year. It's time to thank our sophomores for two years of dedication and buy-in to the process and to the program.
It's time to enjoy the holidays, relax, take a break, and look forward to spring season. I don't know what's going to happen, but I can assure you that these girls, these sisters, this team, is ready to take on the challenges of their next volleyball endeavors and whatever else is in store for them academically and in life.
—Coach Jeremy Penaflor
