The Ohlone Women's Volleyball team defeats Foothill, 25-18, 25-18, 15-25, 27-25 to stay in the race for a playoff spot. No one was sure how this match would turn out. The last meeting of these two teams ended in a 3-0 victory for Foothill. Ohlone was not just defeated, but swept off the court. Both were firsts for Ohlone in league matches.
It was clear that staying mentally strong was going to be the key element for the Renegades in this match. These two teams stacked up quite evenly so it really came down to who would be more consistent and who would work better as a team.
The Renegades came out strong in the first two games, showing no sign of a mental block against the Owls. They were calm, collected and controlled, taking the first two games fairly easily. Everything seemed to be going as planned, until the third game Foothill came out with an energy that the Lady Renegades just did not rival.
After losing the third game by a wide margin, the Renegades were ready to finish off the match. By the middle of the fourth game, Ohlone had accumulated a large lead and were showing confidence that they were going to walk out the gym with an easy victory. However, the Owls were not going to give up lightly. They fought their way back to an even score at 24. Finally, the Renegades made it to game point at 26-25 and Senior Middle Blocker, Selena Samorano finishes the match with a huge solo block to give her team their first victory against Foothill in a very long time.
The Sophmores really stepped up this match and showed their stability and leadership in the most important match of the season. Libero Lindsey Calabrese controlled the back row as usual with 35 digs. Outside Hitter Jennifer Covey led the offense with 16 kills and 5 aces and also contributed on defense with 18 digs. Middle Blocker Elise Menicou was also a force at the net with 11 kills and 2 blocks. Olivia Downing had 19 assists and an impressive 14 digs. Stay tuned to see if the Lady Renegades can make it to playoffs for the first time since 1999!
