As the fall 2009 semester started for Ohlone College in Fremont, the Renegades sports programs began their seasons. Here's a recap of opening day at Ohlone.

Lady Renegade's Head Coach Jeremy Penaflor seemed very optimistic about the 2009 season going into Wednesday's opener against American River College, however, his optimism only went so far as Ohlone was swept in three games by the Beavers, 25-20; 25-22; and 25-16.

"We played hard," Penaflor said after the game. "We were in it for most of the match."

The Lady Renegade's did play hard throughout each of the three games, however serving and position errors plagued Ohlone's chances at a 1-0 start of the season.

"It's only the first game, even though we lost it," said Lady Renegades libero Kimberly Lam. "At least we know what we need to work on."

American River and Ohlone traded the lead more than 10 times throughout the first two games, as both teams battled, trading spike for spike, however in the third and final game, the Lady Renegades could not fight back after trailing 12-5.

"[The third game] was pretty deflating," Penaflor commented. "I think after working so hard in the first two games and not getting the result they wanted, they were deflated."

The Lady Renegades started the 2008 season 2-2 in the first four matches before illness and injury led them to a 12-match losing streak to end the season. The 0-1 start isn't exactly what Penaflor, nor the team would want, but he's using it as a learning tool to go into the season.

"I'm glad [the errors] are happening now, because it's something we can alleviate when we get into conference play."
