Coach Liz Rizza will start as head coach of the Ohlone College women's basketball team, effective this month.

Rizza has had the opportunity to work with a number of coaches as an assistant coach using her skills while benefiting from their tutelage, most recently coach Wendy Shuller of Eastern Washington University.

Rizza joined Eastern Washington women's basketball as an assistant coach prior to 2013-14, working primarily in recruiting, video operations to assist in post player development, and academic support.

Prior to that, Rizza was head coach of Dana Hills High School's junior varsity squad and assistant coach for its varsity team for the 2012-13 season. She spent the summer of 2012 as camp director for Pepperdine University camps.

Rizza worked as an intern coach for coach Tara Vanderveer in the Stanford women's basketball 2011-12 season and traveled to the Final Four with the team. Her duties included conditioning, team practices and planning, and administration of individual and team basketball camps.

In 2009-10, Rizza was assistant coach at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and worked as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Grinnell College, Iowa in 2008-09.

Rizza identified top recruits with three-point shooting skills and her main emphasis was guard development and defensive specialist.

Between seasons in 2013, Rizza was an account executive for WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, soliciting corporate sponsorships, developing business partnerships and booking prime time and half time entertainment. In addition, Rizza has an extensive background in television. She spent several years as a senior television news producer for a cable television company in Iowa.

Rizza played point guard at Chatham University in Pittsburgh where she averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per game. She holds a bachelor's degree in communication television production from Chatham University and a master's degree in parks, recreation and resource management from Slippery Rock University.

Rizza lives in Palo Alto and enjoys traveling, being a member of American Association of University Women and working out.

"She'll bring a new energy, experience and dedication to the sport," said Chris Warden, dean of kinesiology and athletics.

Ohlone's team was the Coast Conference champion in 2012, 2011 and 2010.

Rizza will succeed Julia Allender.
