Chabot and Ohlone women's basketball teams are about as different as the cities the colleges reside, Fremont and Hayward.
Ohlone's season began on a path of rough terrain and opposition. The Renegades top player, Geneya Rodgers, went down with a season-ending knee injury and the team started out 0-5. However, the Lady Renegades showed a lot of character through the adversity and went 12-0 in conference play.
"This is the first time Ohlone Women's Basketball team has gone undefeated," said Ohlone Head Coach Elizabeth Stanley. "There may have been another Ohlone team in the 1980's, but none with as much talent as this year's team."
The final two wins of the regular season came last week against Monterey Peninsula and San Jose City.
Monterey played Ohlone tough in the first half. Ohlone was down by as many as 11 before they kicked it into turbo, and ran away with a victory, 81-49.
Ohlone would not allow their rival SJCC to strike first as they did with MPC a few days prior. "We knew the target was on our back and that SJCC had the chance of stopping our perfect season," said Ohlone Coach Laura Elliot. The role of spoiler was not met by SJCC as Ohlone would prevail, 59-41.
"This is the best we played all year," explained Elliot after the game. "We had great intensity. A lot of people did very well."
In the contest the Renegades set a team record 32 defensive rebounds. Christina Dixon, an Ohio University recruit, was the top scorer for Ohlone with 13 points.
"This is not a fluke," said Coach Stanley. "I hope to carry this momentum in the playoffs this week."
