Ohlone College got off to a fast start en route to a 20-point halftime lead before holding off a second-half surge by visiting Siskiyous-Weed to earn a 75-65 win in a Northern California regional junior college women's basketball semifinal at Ohlone on Friday night.
Markielle Styles scored 14 points and Cece Swaggard, Bradleigh Miller and Jasmine Rubin added a dozen each to lead the Coast Conference champion Renegades (19-8).
Ohlone got through this game without the services of point guard Cassie Bates, who had suffered a groin injury earlier in the week.
By halftime, the Renegades had built a 45-25 lead, and looked to be easy winners.
Threats to that lead ultimately proved minimal. But the Eagles' outside game proved most effective in the second half. Siskiyous' Crissy Watts was especially hot from beyond the arc, as her fourth 3-pointer of the game pulled her team to within eight points, 70-62, with 1 minute, 47 seconds left.
Thirty seconds later, however, Ohlone's Rubin came up with a big play by scoring off her own rebound to raise her team's lead to double digits again.
