The Ohlone College women's basketball team came off a 10-day break over the holidays to finish in third place in the Mike Gervasoni Memorial Tournament. The tournament was an eight-team event which took place from Monday, Dec. 28, through Wednesday, Dec. 30, at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino.

Renegades coach Julia Allender wasn't thrilled with the third-place showing - "We wanted to win the tournament," she said, but she was encouraged by the way her squad hung in during their semifinal game against San Francico City College, whom she considered a favorite. "I liked the way we came out in the first half today [the third-place win, by a 64-51 score over De Anza], and we showed we could hang with San Francisco."

SFCC beat Ohlone, 71-62, but had to settle for second place in the tournament after losing 64-57 to Solano in the final.

Ohlone opened the tournament by nudging Merced, 67-66, and following the semifinal loss to SFCC, the Renegades played an inspired first half against De Anza in the third-place game. After Ohlone jumped out to an 8-2 lead, the Dons took back the momentum and led 12-10. Following a timeout by the Renegades, Crystal McLaughlin nailed a 3-pointer to put Ohlone back in front, 13-12. Ohlone never looked back, leading at halftime 33-17.

The second half was never in doubt. De Anza was never able to get closer than 13 points behind, and that came on a 9-0 scoring run in the game's final moments when the contest was long out of doubt.

Ohlone's leading scorers were Ganeaya Rogers, with 16 points, and McLaughlin, who had 14, including going 4-4 from 3-point range. Jasmine Rubin scored 12. Jayme Leftridge pulled down a game-high eight rebounds; McLaughlin and Elise Spain each had six. Rogers filled her stat sheet with five boards as well as five assists. Anecia Jones of De Anza was the game's leading scorer, with 20 points.

The 2-1 mark in the tournament improves the Renegades record to 5-6.
