Coach Julia Allender of the Ohlone College women's basketball team is not allowing any members of her squad to start feeling comfortable, even though the Renegades came into the Saturday, Feb. 13 home game against Mission College having already clinched the Coast Conference North championship.
When asked what she does to guard against a team letdown in a relatively meaningless late-season game, Allender responded, "You just demand. Right now, we're getting ready for the playoffs. There are specific things that we know we need to get better at. And we're looking to go undefeated again."
No letdown was evident in the Renegades' 75-57 win over Mission. Aside from a 3-pointer by Mission's Dominique Ellis to open the scoring, Ohlone dominated the opening minutes, running to an early 16-6 advantage and coasting to a halftime lead of 38-27.
Mission was able to get close, cutting the deficit to 39-35 early in the second half by virtue of some sloppy play by Ohlone which led to turnovers, but that's as close as the visitors were able to get.
Once again, the Renegades were led by their stellar guard tandem of Ganeaya Rogers and Jasmine Rubin. Rogers was an offensive force, often running the length of the floor and pulling up for jumpers, if not dishing to an open teammate. She led the team with 24 points. Rubin scored 13, and Jazmine Duenas had 12 for Ohlone.
With the two wins last week (the Renegades beat Cabrillo College 78-56 on Wednesday, Feb. 10), Ohlone extended its undefeated league record to 10-0, 15-6 overall.
