Bart Stillman, Founding Ohlone Teacher, Passes On

Founder of the Ohlone College Computer Studies Department Bart Stillman died Monday, February 19, 2007 of kidney failure. Bart was quite well known in the community. He was the second Faculty Senate president, serving two terms, from 1969 through 1971. He continued to serve off and on in the senate until he retired. He taught from 1968 until 1994. His wife, Patricia, worked on the bond campaign back in the late 1960s that funded the Fremont campus, making hundreds of phone calls to encourage voters to vote yes. She is still very active in the Sunol community.

A memorial service will be held for Bart Stillman on Sunday, March 18, 2007 at 3:00pm at the Little Brown Church in Sunol (about 1/10 mile up Kilkare Road on the right). Services will be open to the public.

Founding Ohlone teacher passes on

By Eric Dorman, Features editor. Monitor, February 22, 2007.

Founder of the Ohlone Computer Studies Department Bart Stillman died Monday of kidney failure. He was 81.

Though he always enjoyed working with computers, Stillman felt it was especially important to educate his students on the interaction between computers and people, said Stillman's wife Pat. "He was interested in computers," said Pat, "but he was more interested in life."

Stillman was born on Feb. 24, 1925 in East Aurora, New York. He attended Syracuse University in New York, then traveled to California in 1958, where he received a Masters in Computer Studies from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Stillman began teaching at Ohlone in 1968, said professor Carolyn Strickler, who knew Stillman personally throughout his time at Ohlone. Stillman retired in 1994.

One of Stillman's favorite things to do, said Strickler, was to walk to Cloverdale Creamery, then located in the downtown Mission District.

Stillman had his share of fame outside of Ohlone as well. His son, Tom, owned a dog named "Bosco" which was elected Mayor of Sunol in 1981, winning over two human candidates.

Stillman is survived by his wife, Pat, and his sons, Tom and Bill.

Services will take place in the Little Brown Church in Sunol. A date and time have not yet been announced. Services will be open to the public.
