Dr. Ron Quinta Receives State Award
By Dr. James Wright, VP, Academic Affairs, Ohlone College. February 11, 2008.
Dr. Ron Quinta, Dean of Science, Engineering and Technology, has been selected by the California Community College Association for Occupational Education to receive their 2008 Excellence in Leadership Award. CCCAOE is the leading professional association for community college career and technical education in California.
The nomination document cited Dr. Quinta's overall excellence in leadership and focused in particular on his development of innovative partnerships for education and training in bioscience and biotechnology. These programs include a variety of activities ranging from a nationally recognized retraining program for dislocated workers to partnering with a middle school on career awareness programs.
Of particular note in Dr. Quinta's nomination document was his development of the Learning Alliance for Bioscience (LAB) program. The LAB program seeks to involve more high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses, especially those students who tend to be underrepresented in these fields of study.
Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation and the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the LAB program now works with six schools and involves over 250 high school students in a Biotechnology Career Pathway program. Partners in this program include Newark Memorial High School, Kennedy High School, Logan High School, Cesar Chavez Middle School, Mission Valley ROP, Chabot College, and Tennyson High School.
Congratulations to Dr. Quinta on this well-deserved recognition.
