Gari Browning, vice president of instruction at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, has been selected to become the new president of Ohlone College in Fremont.
She will replace Doug Treadway, who plans to retire June 30 after serving as Ohlone's president for the past five years.
"Although the board (of trustees) felt that all three finalists were highly qualified, the board believes that Dr. Browning is the best fit for Ohlone College at this time…" Garrett Yee, board of trustees president, said in a statement.
Before going to the College of the Desert in 2003, Browning worked for the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Browning, a fluent Spanish language speaker, has also been a professor and department chairwoman of the English as a Second Language at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. She has also served on a number of statewide committees for the Chancellor's office of the California Community Colleges.
Growing up in the Los Angeles area, Browning attended Cypress College, earned a bachelor's degree in linguistics from UC-Irvine, and a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from UCLA.
