Fremont—Budding basketball superstars can hone their hoop moves through Ohlone College's youth leagues, starting this month.
Coaching will be done by the college's basketball staff and players.
Justin Carter, assistant Ohlone men's basketball coach, said first- and second-grade youth leagues began in the fall and spring, while two leagues for other age groups will debut this summer.
"We've had a bunch of requests," he said. "It's a fundraiser for the basketball program."
Tiny Renegades will run Friday mornings June 27 through Aug. 1 for 3- to 5-year-olds and will teach dribbling, passing, shooting and other basics. Junior basketballs will be used.
Mini Renegades will run Sunday mornings July 6 through Aug. 10 for first- and second-graders and will develop fundamentals such as hand-eye precision, fancy footwork and balance. Participants should bring their own balls.
Little Renegades will run Sunday mornings July 6 through Aug. 10 for third- and fourth-graders and will impart new skills and build on current ones, from ballhandling and layups to passing and teamwork. Participants should bring their own balls.
Sessions cost $60 for Tiny Renegades, including a basketball, and $90 for the Mini and Little leagues, including a reversible jacket. Each league has room for 48 basketball legend wannabes, boys or girls.
The city of Fremont also plans Little Dribblers Basketball from June 27 through Sept. 12 for ages 3 to 5, and a Basketball Camp from July 14 through Aug. 15 for ages 11 to 14. Details are online at www.ci.fremont.ca.us/Recreation/default.htm.
The city of Newark plans summer basketball camps for ages 8 to 15, too. Details are online at www.ci.newark.ca.us/index.html.
