"All the Way Live" plans to be freestylin' this weekend at Ohlone College Amphitheatre. Four finalist groups from a previous contest at the same venue will battle for cash and top honors. Competition will span much of the weekend in a two-day break dance festival "All the Way Live" Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13.

B-boys and B-girls, as break-dancers like to call themselves, prefer the terms "urban dance" or "street dance." This dance style has evolved since its emergence on the streets of New York in the 1970's to include more discipline and athletic rigor. Usually this style of dance is accompanied by pop, funk or hip hop music, often remixed to accentuate and prolong the breaks. Improvisation or "freestyling" can be a major element of performances. It consists of a group of dancers surrounding the dance floor while each takes their turn to execute tricks, freezes and dance steps.

The weekend event includes workshops for young dancers with top dancers and choreographers including German B-boy Pioneer Storm with his crew, Battle Squad and performances by Battle Squad DS Players and Bay Area dance crew supreme, Soul. Currently featured on MTV's America's Best Dance crew, Soul includes two Ohlone dancers RJ (Kool Raul) Navalta and Jonathan (Bionic Man) Bayani.

So pop, lock, slide and glide for some fierce street dancin' at "All the Way Live." A good time is not optional - it is mandatory!

Tickets for the Friday night professional performance or for the entire event are available through the Smith Center Box Office at Ohlone College by calling (510) 659-6031.
