  • Golf to Raise Money for Community College Sports; Ohlone Community College and Fremont Bank hosts annual golf tournament, July 28, 2012, Newark Patch - The Ohlone College and Fremont Bank Annual Golf Tournament is coming up on Monday, September 24, at The Course at Wente Vineyards in Livermore, CA.
  • Director of Ohlone College's Summerfest 'Broadway Mashup' aims for fall production, July 21, 2012, Inside Bay Area - The community behind Ohlone College's "Summerfest" theater program is rallying to keep the operation afloat in 2013 -- and beyond -- despite ongoing financial issues.
  • Muppet mayhem at Ohlone College Amphitheatre, July 17, 2012, Tri-City Voice - An average boy and girl visit a theater in Los Angeles to celebrate their tenth anniversary. The boy's brother is a slightly orange-tinted Muppet, and the theater is discovered to be the original Muppet Theater, where all of your favorite Muppets once performed. The theater is about to be sold to an evil oil baron who wants to tear it down to drill for oil.
  • Ohlone College kicks off 'movie sing-along', July 10, 2012, Tri-City Voice - With the sun still shining, people headed to the Smith Center outdoor amphitheatre for the first movie musical sing-along of the summer - Singin' in the Rain. The atmosphere was relaxed as families, couples and friends bought popcorn and pretzels from the snack stand and settled into their seats.
  • "Singin' in the Rain" makes big screen comeback, July 3, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Make 'em Laugh! Gotta Dance! Those two phrases pretty much express what will happen in "Singin' in the Rain," the great American musical starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donald O'Connor.

Friday and Saturday Only!, June 29, 2012, Tri-City Voice - What do you get when you cross A Chorus Line on your way Into The Woods to rescue a Drowsy Chaperone and stumble your way into a Little Shop of Horrors on Avenue Q where you meet a Man of La Mancha battling a Wicked windmill that thinks Anything Goes. You get a very long sentence and a Broadway Mashup!
  • Ohlone College Tai Chi Qigong Team wins gold and silver awards, June 26, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Ohlone College students brought home three gold and two silver medals from the 4th Annual Tiger Claw KungFuMagazine.com Championship last weekend. Under the coaching of world-class martial arts competition medalist and Ohlone instructor Sifu May Chen, students excelled in all levels in the individual competition for Yang Style Tai Chi receiving two gold medals and two silver medals.
  • Summer nights under the stars at Ohlone College, June 26, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Enjoy entertainment under the stars all summer long, starting with a live music event in the Ohlone College outdoor amphitheatre. "Rockin' the Hill" kick starts the Summerfest season with six hot young bands from local clubs. The latest musical trends are developing in the clubs - YouTube rates the growing acceptance of club music as one of the top trends in music last year.
  • Baseball Hall of Fame inducts retired Ohlone College coach, June 26, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Paul Moore, longtime Ohlone College baseball coach, was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Community College Baseball Coaches last month in conjunction with the Final Four state championships in Bakersfield, California.
  • Smith Center Presents! Rockin' The Hill, June 19, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Get a rockin' start on your summer with local bands! Whether it's cool jazz, or the hot beat of rock and roll you crave, you'll find all that and more at Rockin' The Hill.
  • Baseball Hall of Fame Inducts Retired Ohlone College Coach; During his 18-years at the college Paul Moore led the Renegades to multiple conference championships, June 13, 2012, Union City Patch - Paul Moore, longtime Ohlone College Baseball Coach, was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Community College Baseball Coaches last month in conjunction with the Final Four state championships in Bakersfield, Calif.
  • Dave Smith honored as Citizen of the YOWZA!, May 29, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Every year since 1987, the Ohlone College Foundation has hosted a Citizen of the Year Luncheon to honor a group, organization, or individual that makes an exceptional contribution to the community, providing important services and contributing significantly to the progress or improvement of the Tri-Cities.

  • Gallaudet University, Ohlone College sign articulation agreement - May 11, 2012, Gallaudet University - In addition to celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Ohlone College Language and Culture Center for Deaf Studies, Ohlone looked toward the future with the signing of an articulation agreement between the college and Gallaudet University. The agreement was signed by Ohlone College President Gari Browning and Gallaudet Provost Stephen Weiner.
  • Homeroom: Newark: Ohlone College to host free spring career fair - May 10, 2012, Inside Bay Area - Ohlone College and the Tri-Cities One-Stop Career Center will host a spring career fair May 23 at the college's Newark campus.
  • Ohlone pops concert - May 8, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Tony Clements directs The Ohlone Community Band and The Ohlone Tuba Ensemble in their Spring "Pops" Concert, featuring an arrangement of favorite Frank Sinatra tunes by Jerry Nowak.

  • Individuals shine light during Fremont Out of Darkness Walk - May 3, 2012, Mercury News: Fremont Bulletin - Christiana Dawson Brands and Cathy Dawson each held a dove close to their heart before letting go, watching as they soared high above Ohlone College last week in memory of a loved family member lost to suicide.

  • Women's Basketball: Thomas signs NLI with San Jose State - May 1, 2012, Tri-City Voice - April 11th marked the opening day for prospective four-year college athlete's to sign a National Letter of Intent (NLI), a binding agreement between an athlete and the institution where the athlete intends to enroll; the institution intends to provide athletic financial aid (athletic scholarships). Ohlone College's 2012 Northern California Player of the Year, Chereese Thomas, signed her NLI with San Jose State on opening day in Epler Gymnasium.
  • Watching over the Wolves - April 30, 2012, Napa Valley Register - Rob Brandon's first year at Ohlone College in Fremont was a life-changing experience.
  • Community College Students Toss Questions to Legislators - April 26, 2012, CupertinoPatch - Higher tuition, fewer class offerings, the cost of prisons versus higher education, and the 600-lb. Gorilla—repeal of Prop. 13—were among the subjects broached by students at a town hall-like meeting with state legislators and community college students.

  • Fremont college to hold suicide-awareness walk - April 19, 2012, Mercury News - Ohlone College will hold its second Out of the Darkness Campus Walk on Tuesday to raise awareness about depression and suicide. More than 150 faculty, staff and students walked last year in memory of former campus security guard Stewart Dawson, who committed suicide in 2010.
  • Local workers get training for green jobs, and placement - April 19, 2012, Mercury News - …The [SolarTech Workforce Innovations Collaborative] program's eight- to 10-week courses, held at community colleges like Foothill College in the Los Altos Hills or Ohlone College in Fremont, are done for this term, and now SWIC is focused on placing its graduates in real jobs.

  • 40th Anniversary of Deaf Studies Division - April 13, 2012, Tri-City Voice - The Deaf Studies Division at Ohlone College cordially invites you to join us in celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Ohlone College Language and Culture Center for Deaf Studies. In 1972, under the inspired leadership of George Attletweed and other visionary educators, the Deaf Studies Division at Ohlone College was opened as a way for Deaf students in the area to continue their education at an institution for higher learning. This led to the growth of language instruction in ASL and the Interpreter Preparation Program.

  • Homeroom: Ohlone College, Fremont - March 22, 2012, Inside Bay Area - Ohlone College will build a 1 megawatt solar farm on its Fremont campus, the first major project to be paid for by the 2010 Measure G bond. … More than 800 students from 35 high schools descended on Ohlone College's Fremont campus last weekend for the 18th annual High School Theatre Festival.
  • Ohlone hosts recruitment fair for Solyndra workers - March 16, 2012, Mercury News - For Solyndra employees still looking for work, Ohlone College will host a recruitment event next week at its Newark campus. Shadia Schoen, Ohlone's event spokesperson, said the college is hoping about 10 employers will show at the March 23 recruitment drive.
  • Chamber Singers pay tribute to those who serve - March 13, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Ohlone College Chamber Singers present their 12th Annual Masterworks concert honoring the troops that have fought valiantly on the battlefronts for our country.
  • Ohlone students nominated for acting awards - March 2, 2012, Tri-City Voice - From Gregory Peck to Danny Glover, the acting prowess that has its roots in the Bay Area is quite amazing. And it continues to expand. Two Ohlone College students, Steven Vogel and Chris Joseph, have been nominated for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Awards at the American College Theatre Festival (ACTF).

  • Ohlone Kicks off Black History Month with celebrity performance - February 7, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Barry "Shabaka" Henley is not only dramatic, hilarious, and everything Hollywood, he is also part of the defining generation of the civil rights movement in the entertainment business. To start off Black History month, Henley will take the audience on a journey through time to the history of black artists in drama beginning in New York in the 1820s, through the 1960s black artists' movement.

Fall 2011

  • Chamber Singers Ring in Christmas at the Mission - December 23, 2011, Fremont Bulletin - The Ohlone College Chamber Singers performed their 26th Annual "Christmas at the Mission" at Old Mission San Jose on Dec. 17 and 18.
  • Ohlone board picks Crosbie to replace Nardolillo - December 14, 2011, Mercury News - Ohlone College trustees Wednesday night appointed Ann Crosbie to fill a vacant seat on the board.
  • It's always green at Ohlone - November 18, 2011, Tri-City Voice - Although many may believe that it is always a bit greener on the other side of the hill, Ohlone College emphatically rejects that thought. Ohlone College's Newark Campus is certified as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum, the highest rating possible for energy efficiency and sustainability by the U.S. Green Building Council.
  • Ohlone to appoint new trustee - November 10, 2011, Mercury News - Applications are now being accepted for candidates seeking an appointment to the Ohlone College board of trustees to complete the term of former Trustee Nick Nardolillo.
  • Ohlone changing election system - October 15, 2011, Inside Bay Area - Ohlone College once again is planning to change the way it elects trustees, this time out of fear that its current system violates federal law.
  • Ohlone trustee being deployed to Afghanistan for a year - September 30, 2011, Inside Bay Area - Ohlone College once again is considering options to develop retail shops on up to 20 acres of its Fremont campus fronting Mission Boulevard. Trustees soon will study the prospects for leasing or selling at least a portion of the land after the school received multiple inquiries from developers.
