Applications are now being accepted for candidates seeking an appointment to the Ohlone College board of trustees to complete the term of former Trustee Nick Nardolillo.
Ohlone trustees voted unanimously Wednesday to appoint Nardolillo's successor rather than hold a special election in February that would have cost more than $100,000.
"Personally, since it's a short term anyway, I think it would be silly to incur that expense," Board President Rich Watters said during the meeting.
Trustees will appoint Nardolillo's replacement during the Dec. 14 meeting. The appointee will serve out the final year of Nardolillo's term, and could then choose to run for the seat in the November 2012 election.
Applications are available online at www.ohlone.edu/board. Applicants must live in Fremont or the small portion of Union City that is included in the college district.
Nardolillo, who was first elected to the board in 1996, resigned from office last month after a Bay Area News Group investigation revealed that he had been living for more than a decade outside district boundaries at his Livermore winery.
Prosecutors said last month that they planned to file criminal charges against Nardolillo.
