  • Ohlone TV station goes HD, August 22, 2013, Mercury News: Fremont Bulletin - Work has begun to convert the Ohlone College Television Station into a high definition broadcast center. Full conversion is expected to be completed in 2014.
  • What's Up Doc? Under the Stars, August 20, 2013, Tri-City Voice - What's Up Doc? takes you on a wild ride through the City by the Bay in a mad-cap masterpiece of comic genius with Barbra Streisand as the beguilingly kooky girl that Ryan O'Neal can't seem to resist, no matter how hard he tries. This hilarious screwball comedy, that outlasts the test of time, will play this Friday, August 23, at 8:30 pm, in the Smith Center outdoor amphitheater at Ohlone College in Fremont.
  • College television going HiDef, August 20, 2013, Tri-City Voice - Work has begun to convert the Ohlone College Television Station into an HD (High Definition) Broadcast Center. Full conversion will be completed in 2014.
  • Ohlone Smith Center presents live performance, vintage film in Fremont, August 15, 2013, Mercury News: Fremont Bulletin - The Smith Center at Ohlone College will present two shows through the end of the August.
  • Ohlone president invited to live interview radio show, August 13, 2013, Tri-City Voice - Dr. Gari Browning, President of Ohlone College, will be interviewed live on "The CEO Show" by Silicon Valley Leadership Group's Senior Vice President Dennis Cima. The radio show airs on KLIV, 1590 AM, broadcast from San Jose. It will broadcast from 7 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, August 13.
  • Theatre Review: 'Proof' brings powerful presence to SummerFest lineup, July 23, 2013, Tri-City Voice - SummerFest ups its game with David Auburn's Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "Proof," playing July 25 - 28 at Ohlone College. The story of the discovery of a groundbreaking mathematical proof and the mystery of its authorship framed by issues of genius, mental illness, love, and trust is a compelling and moving experience not to be missed.
  • 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' with 'Bawdy Caste' live under the stars, July 16, 2013, Tri-City Voice - Get ready to do the Time Warp all over again! Join the fun in this interactive sing-along, act-along cult classic, back by popular demand on Ohlone's outdoor screen! "Bawdy Caste" brings this humorous tribute to the sci-fi horror B movies of the '50s and '60s to life with a live performance to help you get in the mood.
  • Auditions for "Jesus Christ Superstar", July 16, 2013, Tri-City Voice - The Ohlone College Theatre Department announces open auditions for their new fall production of "Jesus Christ Superstar." Auditions take place Saturday, July 20, from 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. No appointments; first come, first served.
  • Ohlone College announces Summer Softball Camp, July 9, 2013, Tri-City Voice - This week-long camp will emphasize skills needed for throwing, fielding, pitching and catching while stressing the important aspects of each defensive position.
  • An epic tale of bravery under the stars at Ohlone College, June 25 2013, Tri-City Voice - What is more important? Following tradition or being true to yourself? Set in ancient China, "Mulan" recounts a folktale of a young girl as she struggles with this question while battling everything from a china tea cup to a Hun invasion pouring over the Great Wall.

  • Ohlone Foundation Celebrates Community Leaders, June 10, 2013, Fremont Patch - More than 250 people attended the star-studded 25th Annual Ohlone College Foundation Citizen of the Year event, "Starry Night: Citizen of the Year Gala" emceed by NBC Bay Area newscaster Scott McGrew. In celebration of a quarter century of community leaders, all of the previous Citizen of the Year awardees were recognized.
  • World Tai Chi and Qigong Day draws 300 participants, June 4, 2013, Tri-City Voice - Over 300 participants took part in Ohlone College's First Annual World Tai Chi and Qigong (pronounced Chee-GONG) Day on April 27. Practicing at the Ohlone College Newark Campus, community members and Ohlone students participated in what was truly a worldwide celebration.

  • Ohlone College's Deborah Lemon off to DC Summit in June, May 30, 2013, Newark Patch - Ohlone College professor Deborah "Profe" Lemon has been selected to participate in the 2013 Radical Innovation Summit this June at the Organization of American States in Washington, DC. Participation is limited to 35 individuals who focus on education innovation.
  • Ohlone Foundation awards $111,950 in scholarships, May 29, 2013, Mercury News: Milpitas Post - Ninety-one students will be awarded $111,950 in scholarships by the Ohlone College Foundation this year. These students were honored at the 2013 Scholarship/Donor Reception at the Ohlone College Newark Center on Wednesday. The event not only recognized the scholarship winners but also provided an opportunity for the recipients to meet and thank their scholarship donors.

  • Guitarist Richard Kendrick performs original compositions under the stars, May 28, 2013, Tri-City Voice - Fill your night with swinging jazz, soulful blues, and lively rock as guitarist and composer Richard Kendrick breaks open SummerFest 2013 with "Richard Kendrick and Friends" on Saturday, June 1. Kendrick shares his original guitar compositions under the stars in the Ohlone College Outdoor Amphitheatre accompanied by a group of talented "friends" that he's been training on guitar over the year.

  • Hundreds Participate in Ohlone College's World Tai Chi and Qigong Day, May 11, 2013, Newark Patch - Over 300 participants took part in Ohlone College's First Annual World Tai Chi and Qigong Day on April 27, 2013. Practicing at the Ohlone College Newark Campus, community members and Ohlone students participated in what was truly a worldwide celebration.
  • SF Bay Area AEA Members Judge High School Theatre Competition, May 7, 2013, Actor's Equity Association - San Francisco Bay Area Equity members volunteered as judges at the 19th Annual Ohlone College High School Theatre Festival in Fremont, CA on March 22 & 23rd.
  • Ohlone College Offers New Full-Ride Scholarship, May 7, 2013, Fremont Patch - A new full-ride scholarship program for high school seniors in the Tri- City area is now available from Ohlone College through the Ohlone College Foundation. The newly developed program, The Ohlone Promise, offers free tuition, books and related fees to 16 local high school students who attend Ohlone College in fall 2013.
  • Ohlone College in Fremont helps walk "Out of Darkness", May 2, 2013, Mercury News: Fremont Bulletin - The Greater San Francisco Bay Area Chapter for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention sponsored Ohlone College's third annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk April 23.
  • Ohlone Monitor wins seven awards in statewide journalism competition, April 30, 2013, Tri-City Voice - The Ohlone Monitor, the College's student-run newspaper, brought home seven awards - including a top award for its web site - from the statewide Journalism Association of Community College (JACC) convention in Sacramento, which took place April 11-13.
  • Silent comedy comes to life, April 30, 2013, Tri-City Voice - In the early days of film, with no dialog to tell the audience when to laugh, visual comedy was essential to audiences. In the 1910s and 1920s, thanks to silent films, California was producing some of the greatest comic talent the world has ever known; Buster Keaton, along with Charlie Chaplin, were arguably the funniest men who ever lived.

Beginning in New Zealand, this event will spread time zone by time zone across the globe through 60 countries and across 6 continents.
  • Ohlone promotes suicide prevention with Out of Darkness Walk, April 23, 2013, Tri-City Voice - As the third leading cause of death among young adults and teens and the second leading cause for college students, suicide is a huge concern on college campuses. Ohlone's Out of the Darkness Walk will contribute funds to "vital research, education, advocacy, suicide prevention initiatives, and programs to support those impacted by suicide" through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Journey through Alabama, Georgia, Texas, and Louisiana where life is simple and time stands still as 75 Ohlone College dance students captivate their audience in Ohlone College's Theatre and Dance Department Production "Southern Comfort: A Sentimental Journey."

  • Ohlone College to Host Suicide Prevention Walk, April 20, 2013, Fremont Patch - Depression is one of the leading causes of suicide today, and has taken the lives of many. To raise awareness about depression and suicide prevention Ohlone College, in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will hold the Second Annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk at Ohlone College in Fremont.
  • Ohlone College Board of Trustees, April 16, 2013, Tri-City Voice - Ceremonial Item/Discussion: The Board of Trustees expressed sympathy to the family of Felipe Galvan who lobbied for the community college to be named Ohlone College.

  • 'Mr. Ohlone' who helped name Fremont college dies, April 7, 2013, Contra Costa Times - One night in 1967, tension rose at a public meeting in the Mission San Jose district, where the name for the area's new college was to be selected. Felipe "Phil" Galvan, an Ohlone Indian descendant who'd grown frustrated that promises to name the school after his tribe were being broken, began to speak to the large crowd.
  • Ohlone's Leon named player of the week, April 4, 2013, Mercury News: Fremont Bulletin - Ohlone College Lady Renegade softball player Sarita Leon was voted Northern California Player of the Week by coaches in the California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association, more commonly known as 3CFCA.

  • Local performers prepare to shine at theatre festival, February 19, 2013, Tri-City Voice - Richard Leider once said, "The most fortunate people on Earth are those who have found a calling that's bigger than they are -- that moves them and fills their lives with constant passion, aliveness and growth." A passionate calling has been sparked in the lives of six Ohlone College students, Mike Tran, Brian Berkowitz, Daniel Carpenter, Steven Vogel, Edward Ochoa, and Stacey Bell, who have been nominated for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Awards at the 45th Annual Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF).

  • Ohlone selected to compete in theater festival: Dog Sees God encore performance Theatre, February 12, 2013, Tri-City Voice - Bert V. Royal's, Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead premiered at Ohlone College last November under the direction of Michael Navarra. This edgy, honest and scathingly funny play has now been invited to perform at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) western regional conference. Dog Sees God was selected as one of only three plays, out of 137 entrants, to represent colleges and universities in Region VII, drawing from nine western states. Ohlone College was the only community college selected as a finalist.
  • Career strategies for laid-off Solyndra workers, January 22, 2013, Tri-City Voice - A panel of employers will speak on the topic "The 21st Century World of Work," exclusively for Solyndra employees and affected contractors at the Tri-Cities One-Stop Career Center on Friday, January 25. The free event, which requires pre-registration, includes lunch, an employer panel, guest speaker, networking opportunities, and will provide job seekers up-to-date strategies for 21st Century career success.
  • Free career search services for former Solyndra employees and suppliers, January 15, 2013, Tri-City Voice - After the 2011 closure and bankruptcy of Solyndra, the former Fremont-based manufacturer of cylindrical solar panels, approximately 1,100 workers were immediately laid-off. In addition, a large number of Solyndra's suppliers were affected by the abrupt suspension of business, leaving another wave of workers in the unemployment lines. The Tri-Cities One-Stop Career Center at Ohlone College in Newark is working with these job seekers to prepare them for success in the new landscape of the competitive job market of the 21st Century.

Fall 2012

  • Former Solydra Employees Invited to Employer Panel, December 20, 2012, Fremont Patch - Former Solyndra employees are invited to an employer panel hosted by Ohlone Community College and the Tri-Cities One Stop Center. The panel will focus on the "21st Century World of Work" and the event will be held on Friday, Jan. 25 from noon to 2 p.m. at Ohlone College's Newark campus.
  • Ohlone College Board Trustees sworn in, December 18, 2012, Tri-City Voice - The Ohlone College Board of Trustees began the December 12, 2012 meeting with the installation of newly elected Trustee Kevin Bristow and reelected Trustees Greg Bonaccorsi and Teresa Cox.
  • Yoko's Dance Academy presents a holiday favorite, December 18, 2012, Tri-City Voice - According to academy founder, Yoko Young, Yoko's Dance Academy has performed the Nutcracker annually since 2005 to share the art of dance with the community and to bring the magic of a holiday favorite to Fremont. This year's production includes over 100 dancers, ranging in age from age four to adults.
  • Christmas at the Mission, December 11, 2012, Tri-City Voice - The Ohlone College Department of Music presents the Ohlone Chamber Singers in the 27th annual Christmas at the Mission concert. Under the direction of Michael Morris, "Hark How the Bells" will feature special guest Celebration Chimes from the First Presbyterian Church of Livermore directed by Cathryn Griggs, renowed harpist Dan Levitan, and the featured work "A Ceremony of Carols" by Benjamin Britten.
  • Dog Sees God Theatre Preview, October 30, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Based loosely on the "Peanuts" characters grown to high school age, "Dog Sees God" takes the comic strip and turns it on its ear. This Ohlone College Fall Theatre production is an edgy, honest, and scathingly funny look at the issues that teens deal with today.
  • Learning World Special Report: US education in focus, October 26, 2012, euronews - A year ago, a large car manufacturing plant near San Fransisco closed and Elizabeth, along with 4,500 other people, lost her job. So she went back to school. She was lucky to benefit from a state funded programme that offered up to 15,000 dollars towards a 2 year training course. So Elizabeth enrolled on a biotechnology course at Fremont's Community College [Ohlone College].

Headlining the program is Gustav Holst's orchestral suite, "The Planets," transcribed in its entirety for band by Merlin Patterson.
  • Ohlone Hosts Annual Fall Career Fair, October 2, 2012, Newark Patch - Job seekers are invited to the 12th annual Fall Career Fair hosted by Ohlone College and Tri-Cities One Stop Career Center.
  • Ohlone College participates in federal grant for job training, September 25, 2012, Tri-City Voice - Ohlone College is part of a large consortium of community college districts, and UC Berkeley, CSU East Bay, and public workforce systems that will collaborate on an innovative job training and job placement program for Bay Area workers funded by a U.S. Department of Labor Grant for $14,990,417.
  • East Bay Community Colleges Receive Major Federal Job Training Grant, September 21, 2012, CBS San Francisco - A group of community colleges in the East Bay has been awarded a nearly $15 million federal grant to train unemployed workers for jobs in high tech manufacturing and engineering.

  • Betting solar energy will take off: Career changers thankful for federally funded classes, September 14, 2012, Santa Cruz Sentinel - … These are three of the 25 people taking classes at Ohlone College in Fremont, part of the Home Energy Retrofit Occupations program funded by a $2.5 million community based job training grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.

  • Ohlone College refinances bonds, September 11, 2012, Tri-City Voice - The Ohlone College District announced on Tuesday, August 28 that it has locked in significant savings of approximately $8.3 million for local taxpayers by refinancing a portion of its Measure A (2002) General Obligation Bonds. The District took advantage of historically low interest rates by replacing $92.85 million in bonds at an average interest rate of 5.00 percent with new bonds at an all-inclusive interest rate of 3.24 percent.
