San Francisco Bay Area Equity members volunteered as judges at the 19th Annual Ohlone College High School Theatre Festival in Fremont, CA on March 22 & 23rd. Michael Navarra and Aaron Wilton coordinated the local effort to enlist fellow members to support over 1,000 participating students, whose interests ranged from acting, directing, design, technical theatre and choreography. The competition assembled students from across Northern California for two days of what Festival organizers called "competition, inspiration and instruction." Bay Area AEA members Jack Powell, Jessica Powell, Mary Baird and Phoebe Moyer were on hand to assist with judging. Moyer said highlights included "a monologue from THE LARAMIE PROJECT that could stand beside any AEA performance," and "a scene from THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, which was beautifully choreographed and so physical that it required a gymnastics mat. It was a wonderfully positive and high-energy experience watching young talent at their best, as they bonded with other like-minded students from other schools and learned from each other." These students could well be the next generation of Equity members. This is just one example of many local endeavors to give back to our community. SF Bay Area AEA members hope to participate in the Festival for years to come.
