Ohlone Gets Update From WASC Accreditation Commission
Fremont, CA—The ACCJC Western Association of Schools and Colleges, or WASC, sent Ohlone its response to the first of two accrediting team visits on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. The commission states that it “reviewed the report submitted by the college and…of the evaluation team” regarding commission recommendations about Board Leadership “…and took action to accept the report.” Ohlone has a second report due in March regarding recommendations about institutional planning, which will be followed by a second team visit. The College’s accreditation status will then be reviewed at the meeting in June 2009.
Ohlone College President, Dr. Gari Browning, is pleased that the commission has accepted the progress with Board Leadership of the College, but notes that the commission expects “that this success will be sustained.” In addition, the commission adds that the College must “Move immediately to completely resolve … deficiencies” in institutional planning.
Nevertheless the commission praised the academic programs and instruction at the college and the dedication of the faculty in their report of April 2008. (Ohlone College offers an impressive array of programs to its…[students] and is evident in the quality of its offerings and the student-centeredness of its managers, faculty and staff,” and affirms that Ohlone “offers a broad range of high-quality degree and certificate programs”.
Ohlone received a warning notice on July 1st from WASC after the accreditation team visited Ohlone in spring 2008 for the District’s six year assessment. Seven other Colleges in the western region were placed on warning at the same time, according to the WASC-ACCJC web site (http://www.accjc.org/recent_commission_actions.htm).
A full copy of the WASC commission’s report and two follow up letters is available on the Ohlone College web site (www.ohlone.edu/org/accredselfstudy/). For additional information, please contact the Office of College Advancement, 510.659.6208.
