For Immediate Release:

Ohlone College Receives “Sustainable Built Environment” Award From Acterra Group

Fremont, CA—Ohlone College has again been awarded special honors as a model of Sustainable Design and Construction for its LEED Platinum building, the Ohlone College Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology. Acterra, an 18-year-old Bay Area environmental organization, selected the Ohlone College Newark Center as a model of the Sustainable Built Environment award for the College’s innovations in energy efficiency and green building.

“I am pleased to receive this honor from the Acterra Group on behalf of the College. Ohlone College is committed to remaining at the forefront of green building by incorporating sustainable practices in all we do. We appreciate Acterra’s devotion to the cause of encouraging sustainability in business. We are also grateful for the efforts of our construction team in bringing about this remarkable undertaking,” Dr. Gari Browning, President, Ohlone Community College District.

The Ohlone College campus in Newark received the most prestigious certification possible from the US Green Building Council, the LEED Platinum Rating in August 2008. The Center, which opened in January 2008, is the first community college campus in the country to be LEED certified at the Platinum level.

This certification is based on the many advances in green building that Ohlone used in construction and as a part of their low environmental impact operations policy in the attractive two-story building located on the 81-acre campus. Some of these advances include energy co-generation from 1585 square feet of roof top solar panels, one of the largest installations in Silicon Valley, energy conservation through the use of a 4 ¼ acre field of geothermal coils, fresh air circulation from two 10-foot enthalpy wheels at a cost savings of 25%, and insulation material made from 100% recycled denim plus recycled material in all its carpet and furniture.

The Acterra award recognizes “outstanding environmental achievements in the Bay Area business community.” To date 120 business and non-profit organizations have received Acterra awards. Acterra will present Ohlone with the award at a reception in May 2009.
