Ohlone College Foundation hosts “A Latin Experience” benefit dinner

Fremont, CA—Come support underrepresented students in the biosciences by attending an evening of food, friends and festivity. Beginning with a complimentary wine reception that leads to a delicious Latin feast, this exciting evening ends with pulse-racing Latin dancing!

The Ohlone College Foundation is hosting “A Latin Experience” benefit dinner on March 31, 2006 at the Newark Pavilion at 6:00pm to support the Learning Alliance for Bioscience (LAB) project at Ohlone College.

Working in collaboration with local high schools and biotech industry partners, Ohlone College has created a new program that encourages students from underrepresented populations to pursue a career in the biosciences. High school students participating in the LAB project begin building up college credits their sophomore year while taking science classes at Ohlone. After graduation, LAB students are then well on their way to attaining an Ohlone degree in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. These students are now in a better position to either go on to good paying jobs in biotechnology or transfer to a university baccalaureate program in the sciences.

The LAB project is funded by the National Science Fund (NSF), an honor that is usually awarded to such research institutions as Stanford University and the University of California system. However, with the cost of tutors, textbooks and staff development additional funding is required. Sponsorships are still available.
