International Sensation Breath of Asia Brings the “Music of Vietnam” to Ohlone College

Fremont, CA—Breath of Asia, “Music of Vietnam,” is the first ensemble of its kind. Its combined use of traditional music composed with a modern twist, theatrical presentation and solid musicianship, brings Vietnam’s finest cultural traditions to an international audience.

Come and join the wild ride that is Vietnam’s history from the ancient world to modern times. The ensemble features national champion and gold medal winner Van-Anh Vo on dan tranh (zither), Khac Quan on violin, Ai Van on vocals, Huy Phan-bass and Song My on dan bau and violin. Rounding out the ensemble are Kumi Uyeda on piano and Jason Jong on percussion. Compositions range from century old traditionals to modern music by Do Bao, Vietnam’s top composer.

In 2003, dan tranh player Van-Anh Vo, was nominated for an Academy Award for co-composing the soundtrack for Daughter from Danang, which won best documentary at the Sundance Film Festival. Most recently, she is known for her accomplishment of co-composing and recording the 2009 Emmy Award winning soundtrack for the documentary Bolinao 52.
