Ohlone College Hosts Suicide Awareness Honoring Safety Officer
Fremont, CA—On December 28, 2010, Ohlone College lost a dear staff member, Stewart Dawson, who had worked as a campus security guard, to a tragedy that has claimed the lives of many loved ones: Depression. Together with the Northern California chapter for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Ohlone College is hosting Out of the Darkness Campus Walk to honor Stewart Dawson and to raise awareness about depression and suicide prevention. There is no charge for participating in the walk but there is a set goal of raising $1,000 dollars to help support American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Half of the money will go to the national chapter to cover costs of advertising and supplies for the event while the other half will go to the Greater Bay Area Chapter to support the Ohlone College students in prevention, education and support.
Stewart Dawson was a much-loved member of the Ohlone Community College District family and worked for Ohlone as a security guard in Campus Police Service for the past six years. Steward was also a former Ohlone College student, who earned his associate’s degree in administration of justice. A nature enthusiast, Stewart took amazing photos of the animal life at Ohlone and was given the First Annual Environmental Awareness award by the Environmental Studies Department for his informative messages about Ohlone’s wild life. Stewart is survived by his family and friends and will always be remembered as the funny, smart, and caring animal lover.
This event is sponsored by American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the Ohlone College Student Health Center, and ASOC. For more information about registration, please contact Sally Bratton at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 510-659-7309.
