Fremont, CA—Students at Ohlone College have extraordinary stories to tell; stories of overcoming challenges, of exceeding their own expectations, and of rising to new heights of accomplishment. Faculty members come to know many of these stories while guiding students to academic achievement. Because the handing out of diplomas doesn’t always feel like it adequately celebrates the remarkable work of many students, the Ohlone faculty developed a longstanding tradition of honoring their students at the annual Student Awards Ceremony.

When budget cuts threatened to cancel the event last year, the Faculty Senate established a faculty-run committee to preserve the tradition that is so meaningful to students and faculty alike. “The best community colleges tend to look a lot like the communities they serve, students of all ages, abilities, and life-circumstance find their way here and discover that they are capable of so much more than they might have imagined. To acknowledge and reward such students not only encourages them to greater achievement, but helps to remind us, the faculty, of why we do what we do,” offered Barbara Duggal, librarian and chair of this year’s committee.

This year, 50 students will be commended for their accomplishments in a wide array of subject areas including, Art, Biotechnology, Environmental Studies, Nursing, Political Science, Speech, and Theatre. In many cases, these students have also been involved in activities outside of the classroom such as student clubs or tutoring in learning centers to assist other students.

The Student Awards Ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 10, at the Ohlone College Smith Center. The event begins at 5pm with a reception and light refreshments. The award ceremony, held in the Jackson Theatre in the Smith Center, begins at 6pm. The event is free.
