Ohlone College Foundation to Honor Rotary Clubs of the Tri-Cities at 2011 Citizen of the Year Luncheon

Fremont, CA—Each year the Ohlone College Foundation hosts a Citizen of the Year Luncheon to honor a group, organization, or individual that has made an exceptional contribution to the community, providing important services and contributing significantly to the progress or improvement of our community. This year, the Foundation Board has chosen to honor the six Rotary Clubs of the Tri-Cities as the 2011 Citizen of the Year. The Citizen of the Year Champagne Luncheon is the last major social event before summer for community members in Fremont, Newark, and Union City. Held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the beautiful Ohlone College Newark Center on Cherry Street in Newark, the luncheon highlights the many accomplishments of the service-minded individuals that make up the local Rotary clubs.

Rotary Clubs are part of an international service organization made up of business and professional leaders, with individual clubs located all over the world. Each club is organized and chartered separately to serve in its community as well as to contribute to the international mission of Rotary. The stated purpose of Rotary International is to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill in the community. There are 33,976 clubs and over 1.22 million members worldwide.

The six Rotary Clubs in the Tri-city area include Fremont Rotary, Fremont Warm Springs Sunrise Rotary, Mission San Jose Rotary, Newark Rotary, Niles (Fremont) Rotary, and F.U.N. Sunset Rotary Club(Union City). Each club has upheld the Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self’ by their meritorious services to their respective Fremont, Newark, and Union City family.

These clubs provide scholarships, assist schools, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, homeless shelters, medical clinics, and many non-profit organizations. They also raise funds for medical equipment and supplies, computer labs, and provide for needs in countries around the world and many other causes. Fundraising takes place at events such as the Newark Rotary Annual Crab Feed, The Niles Rotary Reverse Raffle and Dinner, The Evening of Sparkles, and the Great Chili Cook-Off as well as annual donations from each member in the club.

In addition to honoring the services of Rotary Clubs of the Tri-Cities, the luncheon will also recognize the outstanding student recipients of Ohlone College Scholarships this academic year. Over $115,000 in scholarships will be awarded this spring by the Ohlone College Foundation.

The Ohlone College Foundation has been presenting a Citizen of the Year Award at the Annual Benefit Luncheon since 1987. The Ohlone College Foundation raises funds to provide scholarships and program support to Ohlone students and to the college. The Citizen of the Year Champagne Luncheon is the Foundation’s largest fundraising event and one of the most recognized events in the community.

It is held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the beautiful Ohlone College Newark Center on Cherry Street in Newark. For more information, to purchase tickets, or to hear about sponsorship opportunities, please visit or call 510-659-6020.
