Annual High School Theatre Festival at Ohlone College Attracts Over 800 Students Across State

Fremont, CA—Hundreds of students flock to the Ohlone College campus in Fremont, CA each year for the high school theatre festival. This year is no exception—over 800 participants were bused in from 35 high schools across the state. The festival is a two- day event starting at noon on Friday and then winding up on Saturday with a final showing for all the winners at the end of the day. Five counties are represented including Alameda, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin and even Nevada Union High School from up in the Gold Country.

Students compete in multiple categories from drama to comedy to musical. There is even Tech Olympics for lighting, sound and computerized equipment. Almost 150 judges join forces to provide commentary, helpful critique and, of course, award the prizes.

The competition has been taking place for 18 years now, the brainchild of Theater Professor Tom Blank. Blank says, “It’s great to see the enthusiasm and team spirit that these kids have. It’s been on the verge of rain all day, but nothing seems to dampen their spirit!”

The big winners at the end of the event were Westmoor High School in Daly City (Spirit), Oakland School of the Arts (Tech Sweepstakes), new-comer Novato/Marin School of the Arts (Judges Sweepstakes), and Lowell from San Francisco (Overall Sweepstakes). Local Fremont schools Washington and Irvington also placed high in all events.
