Travel into a World of Entertainment as the Smith Center Presents the Season of the Arts - Press Release, Office of College Advancement

Fremont, CA—Experience top caliber entertainment as the Smith Center at Ohlone College takes you on a global journey with exciting performances lined up for the 2012-2013 Season of the Arts.

Experience the cool jazz sensations and innovative sounds of guitarist Grant Geissman and the Geissman quintet on Saturday, October 20. Grant has toured worldwide, recorded 14 jazz albums, composed Grammy winning scores for Monk and Mad Men; is returning to Ohlone College with yet another chart topping album under his belt, Cool Man Cool. His groundbreaking guitar solo from the late 70s on Chuck Mangione’s Feels So Good is right up there with Stairway to Heaven as one of the pieces every young guitarist attempts to master.

Next, journey to the east as master musicians from India and China, Aditya Verma and Yihan Chen, join us in November to share their impressive skills on the traditional instruments of their countries. Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, these musicians bring an electrifying, emotionally revealing performance that gives a new and exciting voice to their cultural experience.

Closing the first half of the Season of the Arts is a holiday favorite, The Nutcracker, performed by Yoko’s Dance Academy. Bring the family and travel to a winter wonderland as they perform to Tchaikovsky’s holiday masterpiece in December.

The season continues in 2013 with three outstanding performers including classical pianist, Gwendolyn Mok, showcasing her expertise in Ravel’s repertoire in February; then straight from New York, mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin, who will capture audience attention with her rich and melodic voice in March; and for the season’s closing act, organist Jerry Nagano accompanies another of Buster Keaton’s hilarious silent comedies, “College” in May.

The Season of the Arts at the Smith Center at Ohlone College will take you on a journey of entertainment with unique, exciting, professional performers representing cultures from around the world!
