“Proof” – Tony Award-Winning Drama at Ohlone College - Press Release, Office of College Advancement
Fremont, CA—The philosopher Seneca said, “There is no great genius without some touch of madness.” Decide this for yourself as you witness a story of the difficulty, vulnerability and unpredictability of love, trust and genius in the Ohlone Summer Repertory Theatre production of “Proof,” directed by Michael Navarra.
This Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway drama unfolds the daughter of a recently deceased mathematician struggles to prove the authorship of a landmark mathematical proof discovered among her father’s papers, while also dealing with her father’s legacy of genius and the mental illness that took his life. This stirring drama is brought to life through the distinguished acting of veteran actors Jessica Bettencourt, Stacey Lynn Bell, Daniel Carpenter and Jim Jones under Navarra’s skillful direction.
Michael Navarra is a professional producer, director, and actor in both theatre and film and is a member of SAG, AFTRA and Actor's Equity. His producing credits include "Us," a feature film starring Alanna Ubach, which premiered in June 2013 at the historic Chinese Theatre in Hollywood; the pilot episode for "Finding The One," which he also wrote and directed; the documentary "Resurrecting Love;" and Sam Shepard's play "Fool For Love" in Seattle, Washington. He is a graduate of UC Irvine and holds an MFA in Acting from the University of Washington, where he studied with Jon Jory. Last year Navarra directed Ohlone College’s theater production “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead”, which was a regional finalist at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. He was also the first American acting teacher to teach at the Zhejiang Academy in Hangzhou, China.
The cast of “Proof” brings their fair share of talent and experience to the Ohlone College production. Jessica Bettencourt plays the lead role of Catherine. Bettencourt has appeared in multiple short films and web series since she moved to Los Angeles after graduating from Santa Clara University. She studied theater and film acting at the Art of Acting Studio in Hollywood where she recently led the cast of Eve Ensler’s “Necessary Targets” as J.S. An alumnus of Ohlone College, she appeared in three full productions at Ohlone before transferring.
Jim Jones, well known for his Shakespearean roles, has been active in the North Bay theater community for over 30 years. Jones won the 2012 “Arty” Award for Supporting Actor from Solano County for the drama “Distracted.” He portrays Robert, Catherine’s father.
Daniel Carpenter was a finalist for the prestigious Irene Ryan Scholarship for his performance in the Ohlone Theatre Department’s “Dog Sees God” last year at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Portraying mathematician Harold Dobbs, this is Daniel’s third full production at Ohlone College.
Also a finalist for the Irene Ryan Scholarship for “Dogs Sees God,” Ohlone alumnus, Stacey Lynn Bell, has performed with many theatre companies in the Bay Area for over 20 years. She plays Claire, Catherine’s sister from New York.
The presentation does not stop at outstanding acting talent. Audiences will also experience high quality sound and lighting designs of Ohlone College students who have developed their skills in the entertainment lighting and design technology program. “Proof” is truly a showcase of multiple talents nurtured by Ohlone’s Theatre Department.
A story of life, love and loss in this grand show of talent, this presentation of “Proof” should not be missed. For more information, please visit www.smithcenter.com.
