Ohlone College Theatre Guild Breaks the Fourth Wall at Bay Area Premier of rogerandtom

Fremont, CA—In a perfect world, problems like fighting siblings and troubled marriages do not exist. However, Roger does not live in a fantasy world, and is ever conscious of the alienated relationship he has with his brother Tom. Roger’s sister Penny, however, is stuck in a make-believe reality, and her husband, Richard, is torn between both worlds. Which is a portrayal and which is real? Will siblings remain distant and a marriage fall apart?

Find out in the Bay Area premier of the Ohlone College Theatre Guild’s production of rogerandtom in the Smith Center at Ohlone College February 6, 7, and 8 at 8pm. This clever play-within-a-play (within-a-play), written by Julien Schwab, is hailed by the New York Times as "an absurdist comedy of a fresh, exciting elevation—clever and making its way toward brilliant."

The story unfolds after Tom has written a play about his brother Roger and has somehow convinced the reticent Roger to come and see it with their sister Penny. But when the characters of the show literally pull Roger into their world, he is forced to play along if he wants to get close to his brother again.

The play, under the direction of Ryan Mark Weible, is produced by the Ohlone College Theatre Guild. Weible is no stranger to theatre, having worked on Broadway as script supervisor and assistant to the librettist on Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. In 2008, Weible received the Overall Excellence Award for Outstanding Play, and recently published in The Best Plays of 2008-2009 (Assistant Director - New York Fringe Festival). Recent Bay Area directing credits at the Diablo Theater Company include: Into the Woods, The Producers, and Thoroughly Modern Millie, which received four Shellie Awards (including Best Director and Best Musical). Co-producing credits include: the NYC Winners Workshop and Awards Ceremony (National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts), and the debut CD release concert Fifteen Seconds of Grace, for TONY Award winner Victoria Clark.

Under Weible’s direction, the characters are brought to life by three Ohlone College Theatre Department students. Danny Carpenter, a 2013 Irene Ryan Scholarship finalist, stars as Roger in his fourth production at the College. Courtney Henderson portrays Roger’s sister Penny in her first role at Ohlone. Steven Vogel takes on the dual role of Richard/William in his final performance at Ohlone College before pursuing a career in film in Los Angeles.
