James “The Amazing” Randi Showcased in Documentary at Ohlone College - Press Release, Office of College Advancement
Fremont, CA—Magician turned skeptic, James Randi truly is an “honest liar,” as ironic as that sounds. But Randi is no ordinary man. “An Honest Liar” is an entertaining feature-length documentary that chronicles the life and career of James “The Amazing” Randi, the world-famous magician and infamous debunker of frauds. The filmmakers use a selection of vintage television clips and interviews by well-known celebrities who have worked with or admired Randi, including stories from Randi’s personal life.
The film reveals the story of a magician who turned his bag of tricks on con artists to expose the trickery they use to deceive people out of their life’s savings. But, in another twist, a shocking revelation in Randi’s personal life questions whether Randi has himself been deceived…or is it another trick?
Seminal episodes in Randi’s career are relived, including his celebrated debunking of the spoon-bending Uri Geller. Audiences get inside stories of how Randi exposed the fraudulent faith-healer Peter Popoff and revealed the tricks of “knifeless surgery.” The film brings to life “Project Alpha,” as well as the famous “Carlos Hoax” where Randi exposed the gullibility of the public by unleashing a fake mystic upon the people of Australia.
The film features appearances by Bill Nye (The Science Guy), Neil deGrasse Tyson (Cosmos 2014), Adam Savage (Mythbusters), and illusionists Penn & Teller who all talk about how Randi has influenced both their lives and careers.
The film screening is the twelfth installment in the Ohlone College Psychology Club Speaker Series. In April 2012, James Randi himself was a guest speaker as part of this same series. Psychology professor Sheldon Helms worked alongside Ohlone’s Psychology Club to host Randi in 2012. “Like millions of others, Randi's influence in my life spans decades. The only difference between me and most of the others is that I have the honor of calling him a friend," says Helms.
Co-director of the film, Tyler Measom, will attend the screening at Ohlone College to tell the story behind the story and answer questions following the film presentation. “An Honest Liar” is Measom’s third film to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Since its premiere in 2014, “An Honest Liar” has won “Best Feature Documentary” at the Newport Film Festival and “Best Feature” in the American Film Institute Docs Festival. Described by POV magazine as “an enchanting magic act with its web of lies, cheats, and reveals,” it’s bound to captivate the audience’s attention. Ohlone College is proud to be the only college hosting a screening.
