Ohlone College Brings Suicide Awareness to Light at 5th Annual Out of the Darkness Walk - Press Release, Office of College Advancement
Fremont, CA—Out of the Darkness brings students, faculty and the community together to shed light on suicide awareness and prevention. The fifth annual event will be held on Wednesday, April 15, at the Ohlone College Newark Center.
The 5K walk offers participants an opportunity to make friends, find emotional support, and build community. The walk raises funds for education, advocacy, research and support programs for those impacted by suicide.
In the United States, a person dies by suicide nearly every 14 minutes, claiming more than 38,000 lives each year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students. STEP Up Ohlone, a program funded by a three-year federal grant, promotes student mental health, teaching the community how to support those who are at risk and to remove the stigma around seeking treatment.
“The biggest barrier to providing support to those who need it remains the stigma around seeking mental help. We as a country are still not comfortable talking about mental health issues,” said Sally Bratton, Director of the Student Health Center. “Out of the Darkness demonstrates that there is social support for those who struggle with depression and thoughts of suicide. And we’re willing to mobilize!”
Last year’s walk raised over $2,700 and brought together more than 60 participants. “We certainly hope to top that this year,” said Sang Leng Trieu, Project Director of STEP Up Ohlone. “The Out of the Darkness Walk is one of Ohlone College’s year-round efforts to combat suicide.”
STEP Up Ohlone co-sponsors the Out of the Darkness Walk with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and provides educational information at the event. To make a donation, for more information, or to register in advance, please visit: www.ohlone.edu/go/campuswalk.
