Ohlone College’s Fall Theatre Production: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest - Press Release, Office of College Advancement
Fremont, CA—With a cast and crew of more than 50 students, the Ohlone College Department of Theatre and Dance presents the acclaimed play, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The play, set in a mental hospital for convicted criminals, explores the issues of individual identity and freedom, with inmate Randle Patrick (R.P.) McMurphy clashing with the head nurse, Nurse Ratched to fight for the dignity of the patients.
Director Michael Navarra says, “When choosing a play the first question I ask is, ‘Is this play relevant today?’ As I read the latest headlines and observe the world, I think that this story is even more pertinent now than in its time. Respect and acceptance for who we are as individuals has not been fully realized, even in 2015. We are still far from it. Until that day comes, I hope this play will continue to be produced and that its message will be heard.”
The original play ran Off-Broadway in New York for over 1,025 performances, winning several Tony Awards. The 1975 film version became the second movie to win all five major academy awards (Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Director, and Screenplay).
