Procedure for Requesting Unit Overloads - Counseling Department

Student Responsibilities

Students must:

  1. Review overload guidelines (below)
  2. Complete petition form requesting an overload
  3. Meet with a counselor

Definition of Unit Overload

Unit Overload
More than 17.5 units in either fall or spring semester or more than 9 units in a summer session.

Overload Guidelines

  • Any student who does not have at least a 2.6 cumulative GPA in college cannot petition for 18 or more units
  • Students who have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA are eligible to petition for 18.5 units
  • Students who have a 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA are eligible to petition for 19-21.5 units
  • Students who have a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA are eligible to petition for 22 or more units
  • Withdrawals ("W's") will also be considered when determining if an overload should be granted, especially if those "W's" are in a semester(s) in which an overload has been granted
