Curriculum Guides 2005-2006

These curriculum guides are based on the Ohlone College 2005-2006 degree requirements. Students who will be graduating using a different catalog for their degree requirements should see a counselor and/or refer to the appropriate Ohlone College Catalog (view Ohlone's Catalog Rights Policy). All students are encouraged to meet with a counselor to review degree requirements and/or have questions answered.
Certificates of Completion
Includes Deaf Education; Work Readiness.
This certificate is designed for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students who wish to work in the student life program at a residential school for the Deaf or as a teacher aide in a classroom with Deaf and hard of hearing students. Theoretical background in the education and development of Deaf and hard of hearing children, along with practical applications of these theories, are emphasized throughout the program. The curriculum was designed with input from the administration at the California School for the Deaf (CSD) to ensure that graduates of the program are qualified for employment opportunities at CSD and other programs serving deaf and hard of hearing children. All courses are taught in Sign Language.
Requirements for Certificate of Completion:
- Complete satisfactorily the courses listed for the particular certificate.
- Complete at least 50% of the required units at Ohlone College.
- Maintain a 2.0 grade point average in Major Field courses.
Course offerings for this certificate are designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and background information on the educational needs of deaf and hard of hearing children. Historical perspectives and contemporary trends associated with Deaf Education are discussed. The focus of these courses is to provide deaf and hard of hearing students with opportunities to compare and contrast classroom learning with their own personal experiences.

Many Deaf students are interested in coming to Ohlone to gain the necessary skills for entry-level employment. For those students with limited academic skills, Ohlone now offers a 3-semester work-study Certificate of Completion. At the completion of these courses students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion, along with a positive letter of reference for their employer.
