CAPAC members are asked to review and approve the revised RN admission criteria.
Nursing Program revised admission criteria. Sharlene Limon presented recommended revisions based on Chancellor’s Office suggestions after study on attrition
Chancellor’s Office Advisories – Seeking CAPAC Approval
In response to the high attrition rates in nursing programs and the growing need for more nurses, the Chancellor’s Office conducted a study to determine the best predictors of success in nursing program completion. The study was completed in 2002. Implementation of study outcomes are voluntary, however, districts that implement the policy must analyze the possibility of disproportionate impact on race, gender, age, or disability.

Faculty Recommendations RE: Study Recommendations for Selection Of Students
Faculty decisions regarding study recommendations were determined by studying past student success. Our data is somewhat incomplete, as we don’t have the manpower to review transcripts that are not from Ohlone. Based on the data collected and the outcomes from Chabot and Monterey Peninsula Colleges the faculty made the following recommendations with regard to implementation of the study recommendations:
|
College GPA: |
Keep at 2.7 as a means to limit the pool without imposing district restrictions. |
|
College English GPA: |
Include only grade for English 101A or equivalent, and exclude courses below, as well as, ESL |
|
Core Biology GPA: |
Accept advisory as recommended. Requires each course to have a lab. (No longer includes Bio 107) |
|
Core Biology Repetitions: |
Faculty recommends eliminating “I” grades into formula, as they are in-progress grades. |
The formula used in the study generates a percent of success score for each applicant. Faculty recommends a cut score of 85 %. All applicants with a cut score of 85% are then selected for admission through a randomization computer program. The faculty may adjust for disproportionate selection before running the lottery if the data collection indicates that certain groups are unfairly being eliminated.
Additionally, the faculty recommends implementation of the formula to apply for admission in spring 2006. The faculty will study the next three groups admitted under this formula for disproportionate impact and make adjustments as required.
We are seeking the approval of CAPAC before the end of 2004 so that we may implement this plan for Spring 2006 admission.
Nursing Prerequisite Study: November 1, 2004
. Move to approve Chris Warden/second/Rachel Sherman. Motion carried.
