Ø Theatre and Dance – Tom Blank
This is a collaboration between theatre and dance faculty. The challenge was focusing on international history with the college. Enrollment has increased from 142 to 282. The high school music festival is a recruitment tool and the students get 0.50 units of college credit. With Rob Smedfjeld’s help, the Theatre and Dance department were able to get the numbers of students who were registered in the program in 2003 and in 2005 57 were full time students. We have gone from 33 course offerings to 92 course offerings. In the past the focus was on instructor outcomes, but now it is focused on student outcomes.

Ø Distance Learning update – Marilena Tamburello
Recommendation from the Distance Learning Subcommittee for adoption on Rubric for Online Instruction by Curriculum Committee.
The DL Subcommittee reviewed reports on standards for quality in online education: And evaluated rubrics for evaluating online education. At our last meeting the committee voted unanimously to adopt the “Rubric for Online Instruction” developed at CSU Chico and now widely used in the CSU schools. The rubric has been adapted and permission granted by the CSU. Committee would like to recommend that Curriculum Committee adopts it for faculty who develop courses online to use it as a:
o “Self-evaluation” of their online course
o Design tool to assist them in developing their online course
o Tool for evaluating exemplary online instruction for public recognition and awards
The Rubric is more than a “Checklist”
The Rubric describes what would make exemplary online instruction based on 6 criteria (categories). The rubric provides baseline, effective and exemplary practices for each category
o Learner support / resources: specifying course-specific resources supporting course content and links to campus resources
o Online organization and design: structure and web pages functionality and consistency
o Instructional design and delivery: interaction and communication, integration of learning outcomes with learning activities; course provides visual/ auditory/kinesthetic activities to enhance learning; activities to develop critical thinking/problem solving skills
o Assessment and evaluation of Student Learning: learning objectives, instruction, assessment activities are aligned, multiple assessment strategies are used to measure content knowledge, attitudes and skills, feedback, peer feedback
o Innovative teaching with technology: uses technology tools to facilitate communication and learning; new teaching methods are applied; multimedia and learning objects are used; course optimizes internet access and engages students
o Faculty use of student feedback: opportunities for students to give feedback about the course content, ease of technology, instructor uses student feedback to plan instruction and assessment of student learning

Dr. Wright thinks this is excellent. Category 3 course be a rubric for all instruction. Deb Parziale commented that 1 & 2 could be for all instruction just removing the “online” and put “across the board”
Chris Warden – we would need to upgrade the online portion of CurricUNET. The rubric would need to go into the help boxes. A link to this should also be on the Curriculum Committee website, faculty senate, etc.
Chris Warden asked the Curriculum Committee members to look it over and next meeting we will take a vote on adopting the Rubric.
Ø CurricUNET update – new streamline approval process – Chris Warden
Chris Warden briefed the members of the Curriculum Committee on the updates to the approval process that was discussed at the last Dean’s meeting. Revisions to the approval processes were for: New Course; Major/Reactivation; Minor Revision; Additional Approvals; Deactivation; and New Programs
Ø Title III update – Deb Parziale
Deb Parziale updated us on strengthening our institution. We will have 10 new learning communities for Fall 2006. The Grant is asking for 8 faculty advisors. If you have any feedback or questions please contact Deb Parziale.
