Disability Awareness Week - Disabled Students Programs and Services
October is National Disability Awareness Month and to celebrate, we’ve got some engaging and interesting offerings for you to check out. Join us as we again tackle questions such as “Learning disabilities mean he has trouble with reading, right?” and “If she is blind, how can she read this book if it is presented in large print?” There are many questions surrounding disabilities and we hope to answer as many of them as possible this week.
- Monday, October 12, 2009 - Disabled Student / Staff Panel
- 12:00pm - 12:50pm in the Quad (Cafeteria if it rains), Fremont campus.
Our panel will discuss disabilities from a more personal and experiential viewpoint. If there’s time, we will be answering questions from the audience. Flex credit available! - Tuesday, October 13, 2009 - Put Yourself in the Shoes of a Student with a Learning Disability
- 12:00pm - 12:50pm in Room 7207, Fremont campus.
Please join us for this fascinating and informative workshop in which we will help you explore the experiences of a student with what can generally be called a hidden or invisible disability. In this 50-minute session, you will be the student who learns differently in the traditional classroom. There is no need for you to pretend to be anyone other than who you are; we have a simulation kit which presents the material in a new way. Presented by Terry Taskey. Flex credit available! - Thursday, October 15, 2009 - Blind / Visual Impairment Booth
- Time changed to: 10:30am - 12:30pm; in front of Building 1, Fremont campus.
Get your Braille names punched on index cards using Perkins Braille writers. Attempt the obstacle course while being blindfolded and using a cane and meet Carly the guide dog. Students (some of whom are also Ohlone students) and staff from the California School for the Blind will be present - feel free to drop by and say hi!
A spotlight on Disability Awareness Week, Monitor, October 15, 2009 - Ohlone staff and students are privileged to experience life alongside the disabled students who study right here at Ohlone. We rarely realize that our College offers such a multitude of opportunities for various kinds of students with ranging abilities. Ohlone’s DSPS or the Disabled Students Programs and Services is promoting October as National Disability Awareness Month by offering a week of activities to broaden our understanding of the struggles and accomplishments of disabled students.
