Cutting Edge Hot Topics With the Men of EOPS - Extended Opportunity Programs and Services
LIVE AUDIENCE WANTED!
About Cutting Edge Hot Topics
“Cutting Edge Hot Topics” is modeled after the television talk show “The View” featuring four women of different backgrounds discussing current events that affect society and the way in which we live. Our program is comprised of two men of different backgrounds, who are participants in the Extended Opportunity Program and Services Program (EOPS) at Ohlone College. They will lead discussions with Ohlone students surrounding issues, topics and current events that affect students and their learning experience. This program promotes learning in a non-traditional format.
One of the primary goals of Cutting Edge is to provide an avenue to support our College Goal #2.
Develop across the curriculum the Learning College Model, utilizing methods and technologies that hold the most promise for improving student course and program completion success rates.
Student Learning Outcomes
The students will:
- Distinguish various concepts from multiple perspectives
- Employ critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Assess reasons for public speaking difficulties
- Demonstrate confidence in presentation skills
Embedded in the goal, is the opportunity to create an avenue, opportunity, and atmosphere for students to exchange thoughts, ideas, and perspectives. In addition, it will be a venue for them to share their experiences about life, education, and social issues. The founding principle of this program is based on the premise that experience can be a good teacher. Many students have had encounters and challenges that can help and benefit others. It is our hope that the knowledge gained from sharing various experiences with other students can birth vision, enthusiasm, creativity, and motivation to excel.
This program will encourage students to view situations and issues from multiple perspectives. We anticipate that students will grasp the notion that there is more than one way of looking at a problem or a situation. Giving students problem solving strategies equips and empowers them to make informed decisions in responding to life’s issues.
EOPS is leading the way and is on the “Cutting Edge” in developing programs that prepare our students from a holistic approach. This program is filled with rich possibilities, and offers a chance for students to come together and learn how to become better communicators.
