Fall 2008 Scholarship Spotlight - Ohlone College Foundation

Khushboo Chabria
- Sobrato Foundation Scholarship
“I want to make a difference in the world and lower the cost of healthcare in this country.”
My name is Khushboo Chabria. I have been at Ohlone College since Summer 2006 and am working towards pursuing a career in Public Health.
In Fall 2007, along with some friends I created and started a club called AMSA Health Care Coalition where I took on the positions of Treasurer, Director of Speaker and Presenters along with being the Inter-Club Council (ICC) Representative for this club. Our goal for this club is to increase awareness of health issues affecting our college students and to help students pursue their healthcare needs and goals. This year I am the president of AMSA Health Care Coalition and we are planning a trip to Nicaragua the coming spring break to help out local Nicaraguans in community hospitals. In addition to AMSA, I am also a part of Biology Club and LIFE (Liberated Individuals for the Environment) club where I am the ICC and California Student Sustainability Coalition representative. I believe that the environment is in danger and we must come together to create changes to secure our future.
In addition to clubs I work as the student assistant at Campus Activities where I help plan and run various events on campus. I work side by side with ASOC senators and executives and I’m the marketing Director of just about any event that happens on campus. Through this job I have created and Emergency Student Housing Program to help students in need of emergency housing and have also created a Campus Activities Programming Board which will soon be a student run group for putting together recreational activities for Ohlone College Students. I have also volunteered as a note-taker for deaf students on campus as well as at the Washington Hospital ER since 2007.
Besides doing all this, I have maintained a high GPA and have supported all my educational and transportation expenses on my own. I plan on transferring to UC Berkeley with a Public Health major and then further pursing a medical school education to be an Emergency Room Surgeon. I want to make a difference in the world and lower the cost of healthcare in this country. More importantly, I want to make health care available to everyone that needs it. A college education will make all my dreams come true. I appreciate this scholarship because it will assure I receive the best college education.
