In times of skyrocketing tuition rates and a souring job market for recent graduates, many students scoff at the notion that college education is advantageous to our futures. My desire for a college education is vested in my future career goals and past personal experiences. First, as a political science major here at Ohlone College, I hope to specialize in social services and attend law school. My degree will increase my capacity to assist individuals through social services, it will provide me with the leadership techniques and ways to implement social service projects.
This scholarship will provide much needed financial relief to my family. This past year, I was lucky to receive the Ohlone Foundation Scholarship. I was able to put this money to work by reimbursing my parents for the cost of my tuition and all my books. Just seeing their eyes as I presented them this scholarship is something that will stick with me forever. It was a moment of accomplishment that continues to fuel my ambitions today. While the Ohlone Foundation Scholarship enabled me to continue my education this semester, the cloud of financial despair still looms large for my family. As a result of budget cuts, my mom who is a preschool teacher will lose her job. Our family will no longer have any income and health insurance. This scholarship will alleviate some of the financial burden that my family has been facing as they will not have to make the tough decision between choosing to pay for my education or our health insurance. This past semester, receiving the Ohlone Foundation Scholarship gave me a reason to wake up in the morning and hold my head high as it provided me with a sense of self worth. As I continue my career beyond Ohlone College, this scholarship will serve as the catalyst for my future personal and career goals.
