Scholarship Spotlight Spring 2011 - Ohlone College Foundation

June Audrey Ng Yu
- Dr. Gari Browning HOSTS Scholarship
- ASOC Leadership Scholarship
As a child raised in a traditional Chinese family, I did not really understand what my parents meant when they would say, "Education is a privilege." I did not realize how fortunate I was to be able to attend school and receive formal teaching. Reality only sunk in when I visited my cousins in the Philippines and witnessed the lengths to which they would go to receive an education. My cousins did not have enough money to attend formal schooling so they would walk three miles everyday to a lady who taught them how to read and write in exchange for help around the house. Ever since then, I strived to achieve good grades in school. My personal goal is to help the less fortunate. I realized that in order to make a difference, I had to pursue higher education. College would help me gain a better understanding of the world economy and would provide the knowledge and skills I need to succeed as an economist.
This scholarship will be a great financial help to my academic endeavors. Working part-time as an English tutor in Ohlone College's English Learning Center has been a great learning experience for me because I have been able to improve my communication and interpersonal skills. However, with the financial assistance of this scholarship, I will be able to focus more on my studies and devote more time to student government. I plan to be more active in my extracurricular activities by spending more time serving the students' needs and addressing students' concerns in the council. I will also be able to spend more time promoting sustainability in the Ohlone College and Newark campus as a member of the Liberated Individuals for the Environment Club. My experience in serving the students and promoting the students' welfare to the best of my ability has helped me gain the discipline, dedication, and practical skills needed to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Economics.
