My desire to attend college has been a lifelong commitment. Ever since I was in grade school I envisioned college as another natural part of becoming a fully functioning adult, as the final step in the process of growing up. Though I knew that it was not an easy or glamorous experience, college still held a sense of prestige due to its high expectations and standards. However, it wasn’t until I started taking classes at Ohlone College that I truly came to understand the true value of higher education. Many of the classes that I took including history and sociology, which is coincidentally my intended major, informed me how limited education is in many other areas of the world. This realization helped me change my outlook on college in general; no longer was it just the next step in my life it was an opportunity, a gift that I had to better myself both as an individual and a member of society. This realization has not only shaped my viewpoint on college but also my aspirations for my future and possible career. Therefore, it is my dream that after college I could work in the field of international business and relations helping to set up systems of education similar to what I have had the privilege to experience in my own life now and for future generations to come.

One of the first things I learned when I became a Boy Scout was the scout oath and law. The scout law outlines 12 traits that are important to living an honorable and scout worthy life. One of my favorites was the fact that a scout is thrifty. Therefore I have taken being thrifty to heart, and I am especially conscious of spending money that is not my own. In this case my parents have graciously decided to help me pay for my college education something which they had no obligation to do and while I am most grateful for their gift I want to make it as easy on all of us as possible.

This scholarship from the Ohlone College Foundation will definitely help with many of my upcoming educational costs including books and tuition at UCSC to which I have just been recently accepted as a transfer student. I hope to study sociology at UCSC and then to possibly work in the arena of international business and possibly law. These goals are my motivation to achieve and to succeed, something that with the support of financial aid become that much closer to reality.
