Ohlone is celebrating it's 4th year as a smoke free campus. Starting November 1, volunteers and smoke free advocates will be handing out reminders to those who may not know or have forgotten about Ohlone's smoke free policy.
The event will culminate on November 15 with the Great American Smoke Out. The Student Health Center will be serving breakfast items in the quad and have a drawing for a "cold turkey". Information will be available to those who want to quit smoking or help a friend or family member quit.

People say college is supposed to be “the time of your life”. You meet friends, and have the freedom to do what you want. BUT, for many, college life can be difficult, because there is so much to juggle. Many students are left feeling stressed, anxious, disconnected and alone.
Ohlone College is on a campaign and joins National Depression Screening Day to educate everyone that help and support are available. No one needs to suffer in silence or alone.
If you are feeling sad, angry, stressed, weepy or tired and can’t stop worrying…, or maybe you haven’t been feeling quite yourself lately, and you’re blue and just want to talk…. Or, you are fine, but you know a friend who is feeling out of sorts…drop by the Student Health Center, building 16 to participate in free, confidential, education and screenings for a range of common emotional conditions that are often misunderstood and or overlooked.
Or go to www.depression-screening.org for an online screening. Bring the results to the Health Center for scoring by a counselor who will provide information and support.

National Depression Screening Day can help!
People say college is supposed to be “the time of your life.” You meet friends, and have the freedom to do what you want. BUT, for many, college life can be difficult, because there is so much to juggle. Many students are left feeling stressed, anxious, disconnected and alone.
An estimated 19 million American adults suffer from depression or a combination of anxiety and depression.
National Depression Screening Day is held each October to educate people of the fact that it is possible to virtually eliminate the emotional and physical symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders. National Depression Screening Day is designed to call attention to the symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders and to promote prevention, early detection and treatment of prevalent, under diagnosed and treatable mental health disorders. The emotional and physical symptoms of depression and anxiety can negatively impact college success, personal/family relationships, work performance, and life activities.
Some symptoms include:
- An unusual loss of interest in pleasurable activities previously
enjoyed
- Unusual trouble sleeping or eating
- Fluctuation in mood between feeling overly energetic to sad and hopeless
- Feeling keyed up and anxious all the time
- Nightmares or reoccurring thoughts of something that happened in
the past.
On Thursday, October 5, between 10:00am and 2:00pm AND 4:00pm and 8:00pm, individuals can come to the Ohlone College Student Health Center (Building 16) and participate in the screening. Rosemary O'Neill, MFT, Coordinator of Personal Counseling Services, and Sally Bratton RN, FNP, Director of the Student Health Center, will provide education, support and referral resources (on campus or within the community) to those who take the brief screening assessment.
Allow 20-30 minutes for the actual screening process.
Personal Counseling Services are available to all currently enrolled Ohlone College students. Services are free and confidential. 8-10 sessions of short term counseling or life coaching sessions are available to those who want the support to maintain focus, balance and success. For more in depth support, referrals to community resources are provided.
If you cannot attend depression screening at Ohlone, go to www.depression-screening.org for an online screening. Bring the results to the Health Center for scoring by a counselor who will provide information and support.
