Job Summary

Ohlone’s Fitness & Wellness Program inspires growth and health on the Ohlone College campus through fitness, community, and play. The OC Health & Wellness Program is an integral part of Fitness and Recreation and provides customer service while ensuring customer and participant safety and pool safety.

The lifeguard works under direct supervision of the Vice President of Administrative Services, the District’s Risk Manager.


  • Maintain safety and well-being of all swimming pool patrons.
  • Maintain constant and active surveillance of patrons in the facility; act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service. Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports.
  • Open and secure aquatics facility at end of shift.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


The District may be willing to train/ certify candidates who meet certain criteria.

  • Current certification as Lifeguard by a recognized source of training (e.g. – American Red Cross Lifeguard Training)
  • CPR Certified
  • First Aid for the Professional Rescuer

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
  • Knowledge of CPR, First Aid, and emergency medical procedures.
  • Knowledge of customer services standards and procedures.

Required Qualifications

The District may be willing to train/ certify candidates who meet certain criteria.

  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for Lifeguards;
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid;
  • American Red Cross First Aid for Public Safety Personnel.

Physical Demands: sitting, standing, swimming, lifting

NOTE: Fingerprinting and background check required. 

Students may consider enrolling in the Work Experience Program for credit. Moreinformation about WEX will be provided at the Open House/Job Fair.

*Work Experience Program:

  • Students who opt to participate in the WEX program and receive pay will get 75 hours per credit unit
  • Students who opt to participate in the WEX program without pay will receive 60 hours per credit unit.

Work hours credited as part of the WEX program need to be performed during the semester and not during intersession.
