Position

Under general direction, the position’s responsibilities include the design, implementation, and support of Ohlone College Data and Voice Network infrastructure. In this role, the Network Engineer will interface directly with internal and external customers as well as vendors as needed. Analysis, design and documentation of complex cross-functional projects are a significant part of the Network Engineers responsibilities. Perform computer system and data file backup. Must be able to receive electronic text and voices messages via mobile phone or pager. May require some evening, weekend, or off-campus work.

Supervision Exercised

Function as a lead and mentor for Network technicians as assigned.

Example of Duties and Responsibilities

Through clear communication with other IS team members, clients and vendors, design, implement, maintain and monitor Data and Voice network. Optimize network and PBX equipment to maximize reliability while minimizing support costs. Implement and follow approved security procedures. Develop procedures, structures, and contracts for support and maintenance of equipment. Plan and coordinate services changes. On going assessment of Security Risks and implementation of proactive measures to maintain the integrity of network is one of the critical tasks. Troubleshoot network problems and provide fast and effective resolution. Assess institutional needs and new technology to provide analysis and solutions needed on college network. Lead, train, schedule, and coordinate network technicians, technical support staff, including students and temporary employees on a project basis. Evaluate and recommend equipment, tools, and utilities to improve the quality of support for network services. Prepare and present proposals and reports for management and committees. Maintain accurate and complete business records, installation and configuration change documentation including hardware and software inventories, licensing, monitoring, and support contracts and procedures.

Job Related and Essential Qualifications

Knowledge of: OSI network principles, running protocols, concepts, practices, terminologies at an expert level. Strong hands on knowledge on following areas; TCP/IP, Gigabit/Fast Ethernet Switches, IOS, LAN, VLAN, WAN, BGP, Load Balancing, RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, IGRP, H.323, SNMP, 802.1X and 802.11x, Wi-Fi, Firewall and VPN of various types including Open Source solutions, T1, DS3, FDDI, PRI, BRI, VoIP, PBX configuration. ERP systems, Radius, LDAP, HTTP support. Network intrusion detection, Traffic Analysis, packet tracing, security implementation. Network Design, Network Performance Analysis, trouble shooting and analyzing network packets using various Networking tools. Good familiarity with various Networking equipment such as CISCO, Extreme, Asante, etc. Basic level understanding on various OS architectures such as Unix, Linux, Macintosh and Microsoft Server systems and their administration aspects. Open source software and utilities. Some scripting capability (Shell and Perl or Python) is also desired.

Skill to: Monitor and help manage applications and Operating Systems imaging traffic for workstations and servers. Organize, prioritize, and track tasks, requests, and projects effectively using appropriate charts, project management and database tools; instruct, write, and listen effectively; correctly interpret and resolve complex problems; acquire and maintain current technological and regulatory knowledge; use appropriate and correct English grammar, spelling and punctuation; understand, carry out, and give oral and written instructions effectively; author and assemble professional documentation; maintain business records; perform accurate mathematical and algebraic calculations; establish and maintain productive and cooperative working relationships, maintain business communications; work productively and efficiently with minimal oversight; safely lift and move computing and communications equipment.

Ability to: Learn and manage complex systems quickly using provided documentation and on the job effort. Be sensitive to and have an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college personnel and students.

Experience and Education Guidelines

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Bachelor’s degree with major course work in computer information systems and technologies, plus substantial continued education and training in the field.

Experience: 4 years professional experience directly supporting institutional information and communication systems in key technical and administrative roles demonstrating progressively increasing duties and responsibilities that include those defined for this position.

Special Requirements: Ability to work efficiently and productively at a computer console with keyboard and mouse; work in a general office environment; perform skills necessary to install and maintain computers and network systems. Carry a cell phone/pager as needed. Carry a District provided two-way radio during working hours. Including lunch and breaks. May be required to work evening and weekend shifts on a rotational basis.

License or Certificate: Must possess and maintain throughout employment: 1) a valid California driver’s license; and 2) a good driving record. CCNA, CCNP type of certificate(s) are preferred.

Salary

Minimum initial salary placement will be placed at Step 1 ($5,581), Step 2 ($5,855), Step 3 ($6,173) Month depending on education and experience. You will receive 5% step increases annually until you reach Step 6.
